Things to know for the motorcycle test ?

Hi there,

I have to book my motorcycle test asap and can't afford any more lessons

The lessons are £35 each and the test itself is £49 so I will just be going for the test.

I know all about the little 'always keep one brake covered dance'.

i forget the whole plan for a U-turn and Hill start.

What will happen on these maneuvers ?


Atleast this way if I get some advice I can go and practice the test routes for a few weeks while I wait for my test !


Please don't think I'm just trying to cheat and not spend money on lessons. I have done loads of lessons but not for almost a year now ! So I just need an online refreasher course !

ANYTHING USEFUL YOU CAN TELL ME ABOUT THE TEST AND WHAT TO DO !

Going for the test quickly may sound like the cheapest option but it's a big risk, you'll more than likely fail (be fair, if you haven't ridden in a year...) and it'll end up costing you a lot more cash.

At very least save up for a 1 day course then test?! It may well work out cheaper in the long run (altho you may just take the test and pass, like I say, it's a risk..)

I have been riding my bike every day for years now.

Its just the little things that I don't do that I should.

Like when I'm turning I always indicate and then glance over my shoulder,

But I think on the test I must glance over my right shoulder, indicate, then glance over the shoulder of the direction that I am moving ?


Anway, I wish I could do the whole one day course thing, but I think they only do it on the mainland.

Where are you? I know over here in Ireland, the examiners are really tough. You gotta do all the lifesavers, and menouvers right.
But there are no intensive courses here, or DAS its a pain in the @ss.

Im near Belfast.

Thing is, a friend of mine done his bike test recently and now he rides a GSXR600 !

So I dont know how he go a full unrestricted licence....


I should really just book the test, find out where i'm going wrong and practice while I wait for a re-test...

Here (i'm in Newry) you are restricted for 2 years, same as in a car. I took a few lessons, I have the printed instructions for all manouvers in the bike test somewhere. I'll have a look and post them after the kids go to bed.
They show all lifesavers and looks you have to do, I used to put them in map pocket on tankbag and go to the car park at night to practice.

Is Larne any way handy to you mate?

I done about 10 lessons with a crowd up there and done my test in Larne and passed first time. It's 30 quid for a 2.5-3 hour lesson and they will keep you right and the examiner up there is dead on.

mirror,indicate lifesaver for the lane change or positioning

lifesaver before the turn


u turn on the a2 test


pull over on the left

put bike on the centre stand (cg125)

take bike off centre stand look behind you and walk the bike round the u turn


position the bike as near the kerb as you can.

you can have your left foot on the pavement if you want

mirror check lifesaver then ride the bike round the u turn head up and look where you want to go .

left mirror check and pull over on the left where the examiner tells you too

job done

Same as what Tony said but I was taught to do a right hand look where he said mirror.

Eg right turn:

Right shoulder
Indicate
Right shoulder
Slow down and get into the right hand side of the lane
Right shoulder
Turn in
Straighten up
Right shoulder
Cancel indicator

Left turn

Right shoulder
Indicate
Left shoulder
Slow down get into the left hand side of the lane
Left Shoulder
Turn in
Straighten up
Left shoulder
Cancel indicator

Roundabouts

same as before but before leaving do Right shoulder left shoulder right shoulder I think. Was only a few months ago I done mine and I forget already.

Larne is close, im in ballyclare.


I would be booking larne anyway, only thing is that people park cars all over the streets there and I never know if I should indicate to move round and then pull back in, and indicate again to move out every few hundred yards ! [maybe thats only the car route]


I had a lesson with some guys down there, based in an industrial estate. Not bad, but £30 when a test is £49 and I will get exactly wher im going wrong. On a sheet, with the added bonus of a licence if I get it right !

Do you remember waiting list times ?

I'm in T'Patrick so not far from you at all then. That's the same ones I went to down at Ledcom. Think the waiting list is about 3 weeks. Personally I thought the test was handy enough as long as you keep calm and all but book an early morning lesson with Noel and co and he will keep you on through the afternoon for no extra charge if you ask him nicely. Or if you want any help give me a shout and I could maybe show you a few things.

3 weeks is great,

ill book the test tomorrow, just for the expierence of doing a test.

Ill then go down to larne as much as I can to practice, and see if I can find Noel's bunch to follow around and pretend that i'm not,,

I remember that place where they take you to do the u-turn and If I go up there and practise long enough they might turn up and feel sorry for me; throwing me a few tips....
As long as its not, "book yourself in for some lessons mate"

Yeah think there's just the one route and you don't do the whole route - my test was up teh dual carraigeway and back!

Call up to the U turns on saturday at about 12ish and I think they should be there he will probably just let you tag along.

When you're about to do the intricate manoeuvers, the examiner would ride you to a residential area and will tell you to stop. You will be asked to go around the block (often once you're out of his sight, practise a few emergency stops) Don't take the piss with time as he'd expect you to go around the block in no more than 2 minutes. CHECK FULL OBSERVATION ETC before you move off and as you're about to turn for the final corner. I got my minor for failing to do a shoulder check as i was about to move into position for the final left turn and the examiner was positioned in the middle of the road so he pretty much saw this.

Straight after that, you'd ride to the examiner and he'll raise his hand at any moment, signifying that you have to do the controlled stop. Following this, hell tell you to pull over, and wheel the bike in a U-turn. Cover your front brake with your right hand and look left and right as you do the U-turn. Get on the machine and do the U-turn back to the other side of the road i.e. returning to the starting position- Do the observation as you're about to pull out after getting on the bike and NEVER EVER FORGET TO DO THE SECOND OBSERVATION before you turn the bike.

Other than this, i guess the essence of the test is just ride sensibly and naturally using full observation skills and using the rather politically incorrect words of my instructor "watch out for spaz's who cant drive, walk or ride properly on the road" and you'll be fine.

I think 1 days training wont go amiss as it'll help you A LOT!

Into gear
Right shoulder
Move off
Back brake half way up between the starting point and the turn just to give a bit of brake light to show youre steadying it
Right shoulder before making turn
Mid turn, look left and right whilst also using back brake
Continue round the corner

Mine were "Tell me how do you check the oil level", "Show me how to press the horn" and at the end he asked "What way would a pillion affect the handling of the bike".

I don't really think they can fail you for getting those wrong but they help swing it in a weak case.

Oh, the pillion questions

remember ABCD

A- reduced ACCELERATION
B - ompromised BALANCE
C - Conerning ability is affected
D - braking DISTANCE is reduced

If they ask you how you'd adjust your bike to cope with pillions

INCREASE TYRE PRESSURE
ADJUST MIRRORS
ADJUST HEADLIGHTS
ADJUST SUSPENSION

I forgot the link to that really useful thread which pretty much answers all these questions- have a read or search for it and read it thoroughly as it answers all the Show me and Tell me questions - which are pretty logical to say the least.

SUGGESTION - I THINK SOMEBODY NEEDS TO PUT LIKE A STICKY ICON ON EVERY chat area to the thread that i guess everybody's seen so as people wont be saying the same things twice and that particular FAQ is very very useful.
