Hi, I heard somewhere that it's best to leave the tank full as it prevents corrosion of the tank when winter stored. Is this true?

Would you disconnect the battery? I have no power supply in the storage to trickle charge.

Any other good tips?

Thanks.

Park it in the garage, take your key out. Put the key somewhere safe.

When I was at sea I left different bikes for up to 8/9 months at a time doing nothing but disconnecting the battery with no ill effects. Later ones with electronics I left on an optimate.

The only bike I fcuked up leaving for long periods was a GT500 when I didn't start it for over 5 years and the crank seal (I was told) had perished. TBH I didn't care that much as it was my most hated bike ever. Laughing

It's better filled up, depends how long you are keeping it to some extent.
Rust from condensation inside tanks that have been left near empty a lot does cause problems.
If it's in a reasonably dry garage it's less of a problem but in a more typical shed there will be several days when everything gets dripping wet e.g. mild humid days after after a cold spell.

My GSXR I brim the tank and take the battery indoors. Bike on a paddock stand so rear wheel is in the air, maybe once a month i move it to rotate the front tyre. In March I'll put the battery on, correct the time on the clock and ride it to the MOT.

Brim the tank, add some stabilizer if you are inclined.
Clean it,
Acf50 it,
Lube the chain,
Clean the brakes if they are minging.
Air up the tyres.
remove battery, keep inside and charge 1-2 times a month

Then you are set to start back up right away in the summer hopefully without having to spend anything on consumables.

Definitely fuel stabiliser as well. Will only cost a few quid and stop the fuel turning to shit in the injectors. Bit of fogging oil in the cylinders if you’re gonna be storing it a while too.

It's next to your 10mm spanner, Stanley knife and tape measure.

Hows it getting in the injectors?

I start mine and ride it when its warm again and do jjack shit aside from lift it off the floor, perhaps lowering when I go outside to give the forks a bounce.

Fuel injection is for posers. What about carbs in my old boy. Laughing will they need cleaned? I may add that I've never cared for a bike in the past and it usually just takes what I give it, there have been bikes that I haven't oiled the chain. A chain is a consumable. Sitting outside. Have to sell it for a few hundred quid less but it is worth it for a maintenance free bike for a lazy begger.

But to be honest I get stressed out that I don't look after my bikes properly. Nightmare not being able to do it.

The old Fireblade I'm going to look after

My ZZR is carb'd, this year when I laid it up over Spring/Summer I didn't even bother to drain the carbs. No real issues, she was a bit of a bitch to start but once going idled fine. When I rode it out initially it had to be teased up to WOT but once red lined through a few gears it was fine.

For the sake of a few quid of stabiliser, why wouldn’t you? No dicking around with hard starts or “teasing up to WOT”. Or potentially pulling carbs to clean them. Prevention is better than cure, and it’s not like it’s difficult to pour 100ml of liquid into a tank before you fill it and go for a 5 mile ride.

If it's carbs and you're really worried, turn the petrol off at the tap, then let the bike idle until it runs out of fuel in the carbs.

As a general query, how long would you go before adding stabiliser to the tank? Is there another side to it, i.e. any negative impacts of using it?

I often swap between my bikes, and therefore It can be 11, 12 months before I get bored (or because something breaks...!) and I jump on one of my others...
I don't do anything to them at all before 'putting away'.

But when the time comes to use that particular machine I have no problems starting any of them, and I ride it like normal and that no time has passed at all. The fuel doesn't go to waste, I use it all up and fill up when I get to reserve as per usual..

I wouldn't worry about fuel going stale.

Just took my CG out for a run and no issues at all, runs great and ticks over nicely.

Last time i used it was back in February and it still has 3/4 of a tank of fuel from last November when i first got it Laughing Thumbs Up

Indeed I've never actually had a problem with old fuel (even the old ER5 I bought had 18 month old fuel in it and started on the button, although the carbs needed cleaning), just was curious. Often a big difference between "should do" and "can get away with".

Back on the original topic; I have two squares of carpet for under the tyres when mine is parked up. Maybe it doesn't actually do anything but it at least gives me the comfort that I think it's reducing flat spots.
