Heads will roll for this, it shouldn't have been put away with munitions on board partly for this reason.

I did my IOPD start line marshal and scrutineer training at Wattisham. Had a great day there. I was impressed by the old guys who could barely stand on their own two feet but were perfectly comfortable throwing a high-compression Triumph running on methanol up the quarter-mile. Equally decrepit wife firing the bike up on a rear-wheel starter. Those old timers knew no fear.

There was also a lambretta I think from Colchester Motorcycles running 14:1 compression it took 4 of us to bump-start. Made my ear drums tickle when it started and showed a clean pair of heels to a 1000cc Laverda Jota. Very funny to see, and painful to hear.

Have we got any RAF guys? I thought live munitions on jets and choppers were meant to have safety pins with little red flags when on the deck... or have I been watching too much Hollywood shite?

If it was the 30mm it'll be similar to what us peasants had in Warrior for our antique Rarden cannons. Basically a giant brass casing with either a HE (yellow) or AP (black) tip. Practice rounds are blue tipped and don't contain a proper Sabot.

The article doesn't make it clear whether the 'helicopter's malfunction during a live firing (practice) round' was related to the weapon but it could be similar to the Red Arrows' ground ejection of 2011 which was due to a design fault with the safety pin. The pin was inserted but didn't prevent an inadvertent activation.

If I remember correctly, the bolts holding on the seat had been overtightened.

In fairness, most things not specifically armour plated that get hit by a 30mm cannon round (regardless of projectile type) land up with a large hole all the way through them.

One would suspect if they are calling it an ND instead of a malfunction that someone had their booger hook on the bang-switch was making pew-pew noises when shit got real. No sprinkles on their sponge pudding for the rest of the week then...
