Hi guys,

hope you're all safe and saine during this second lockdown.

I fitted my virago xv535 with some black widow open drag pipe exhaust and I'm about to do an MOT on it but the bikeshop that provides the MOT and currently working on my bike are telling me that it won't go through even though the Black Widow website mentioned that they are road legal and will pass the MOT.

I was wondering if any of you knew an MOT center around London that would be less strict on my exhaust and will let the bike pass the MOT.

Basically looking for a nice examiner that like the sound of a loud bike :D :D

Thank you.

South London would be ideal but if someone know someone that will let me pass for sure anywhere around London I don't mind going the extra miles.

Try Roger at Beckenham MOT, he's underneath Tower Scooters at Clockhouse, between Penge and Beckenham.

Why not just tell them loud pipes save lives?
how could they disagree with that?

I would say whip the stock ones back on (if you still have them) but not quite as easy on a V-twin vs an inline engine Sad

My local garage are proper motorbike nuts (compared to my straight laced main dealer) but I live out past Kingston, too far? I can PM you their contact details if it's of interest.

@Shaft: Will try to give them a call this week and see if that could advise me over the phone before booking the appointment thanks.

@WD Forte: I wish I could say that compare to those Toyota Prius that you can't hear coming from anywhere.

@Easy-X: Unfortunately I do not have the originals ones. I went to a garage to get them fixed on and they never gave me the original one when I asked for (To be fair, looked dodgy, I should have known...) If i could get their details so I can call them that'd be great thanks

One wonders how deaf people manage to drive without quadrospazzing themselves and everyone else on the road.

Can't you just disconnect the CDI or something, and wheel it into the MOT station? I could be wrong, but from what I understand, the engine doesn't have to be running to pass an MOT.

I'm sure I've had a bike MOT'd where they never ran it
Maybe rules have changed since, dunno.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-motorcycles/8-exhaust-noise

Not sure how they'd test that without engine on. Though it does say "If possible".

OP's tester sounds like an arse though, I have a bike that failed the noise test at Castle Coombe but passes MOT's and the Trials system on my bullet is properly offensively loud.

Just to be clear, there is no specified Db level for exhausts on the mainland UK MOT (I say mainland, NI could be different) nor is a Db meter used at any point, but the guidance is it shouldn't be substantially louder, if it's not standard equipment.

The get outs are, what is the definition of 'substantially' and what defines standard equipment, given that lots of manufacturers offer aftermarket pipes as a dealer fitted accessory, at the point of first registration - you can use specialist knowledge in the latter case, but you aren't expected to have it.

The basic tests for exhausts are, is it leaking, is it obviously insecure and is it clearly marked 'not for road use'?

If the answer is no to all of those questions, then noise level is purely down to the tester's opinion, there is no specific measurement for it.

OP, book your test with Roger, you will be fine.

The place I take mine for MOT is happy with any exhaust not marked for race use only as long as you have a baffle in. Are there any baffles you can fit in the end (like a DB Dawg).?

This.

I've got a micron race can on my VFR which was stamped "Not for road use". When I got the thing, I sat and diligently polished the (deliberately very light) stamping off with autosol. When I take it for the MOT I fit a baffle and I keep the revs down as I pull in to the industrial estate.

The tester knows the score. He's fully aware it's not road legal but I give him enough room to have deniability if I get puilled over and brought back for an inspection by a VOSA van hiding round the corner after my MOT (which is something they do on occasion).

VOSA hasn't existed for what, 7 years?

Fair enough then, maybe they changed it, it will have been over seven years since they did it to my local MOT guy.

Would you happen to know if this is their website?

https://www.motorcyclemotlondon.co.uk/

Looks like they are underneath Tower scooter. Just double checking before I call them on Friday since they’re closed tomorrow.

Thank you!

That is the place.

Not sure if Roger is the new guy there or the old one that used to race sidecars. The old guy wouldn't MOT one of my bikes that was offensively loud. It was fair enough, I made it quieter.

Roger was the old guy (I wasn't sure if he was still testing, I heard a rumour a while ago he had cut his hours) and you must've caught him on a really bad day, he used to pass pretty much anything that rode in there.

Maybe he had been recently raided.

Roger H is still testing There only running Wednesdays and Saturdays Opening at 10.00
There are sensable about loud pipes but like most places aware that every bike stoped with an item that would fail is recorded against the MOT tester

For an MOT put a leagal no plate on fit as good a baffel as you can find cheak brakes bearings and lights and present a clean bike at the time you booked
This will mostly get you though
Be aware no plate light is now ppart of MOT

Sooo

This is probably me being dumb and that’s okay but I believe that I already have baffles on my exhaust?

I was checking the size of them so I could order some but then I realised that something was already in place.

I attached a picture, maybe someone can tell me if that’s actually the case.
