leaking fork seals

Parked the bike after an afternoon ride, and noticed an oil path down the left fork leg. Inspection revealed an oil leak past the seal and dust cap. I remember an easy trick posted on the internet some years ago; "an old dirt bike rider trick," the originator said.

Slide a piece of old 35mm film negative past the dust cap and seal, and work it around the fork tube. This will remove any debris between the fork tube and seal that could be creating the leak path. I tried it on my VFR, and now 10 years later on my BMW roadster. Worked both times. I'm sure one day the seal will wear out or become damaged, necessitating replacement. But for now, the forks live to ride another day. Hope this post might be of value to someone. Cheerio.
