Probably the bike, aren’t 400s old and imports making parts hard to find and very costly?

I would tend to think so but my quote was for TPO, fully comp is only an extra £200.

Yeah it being an import certainly doesn't help!

Take a look here (eBay store) and see if there's anything you like for a year, or two? Similarly look around eBay stores that sell projects to the public: here being another one.

I'd keep the 400 because you're going to regret selling it and its hardly cheap to buy one back again, but as above grey import and 0 NCB will not have helped you in that quote at all.

Store it, get a second and build up your NCB bonus or polish it to death and sell it on for as much as possible and put it on the "future bike to own" list. Depends how much cash you've got and space for a second.

Try M[SAPCE]C[SPACE]E, out of interest. Dog diddly poop but may be worth a shot.

My ghast has been flabbered - truly.

Buy a more sensible bike and do a couple of years on it to get some no claims under your belt. You're 20 - it's not like you've got a rush ahead of you to squeeze life affirming stuff in.

It's probably because it's a sports bike; although it's "only" a 400 (albeit it's hardly slow), the fact it's a sports bike will mean you're statistically far more likely to plough it into someone than a rider with a sit-up-and-beg commuter.

As above really, if you can afford to do so (and have the space) I'd store the 400 and get a hack to tide you over the first few years and get some NCD under your belt. You could fettle the 400 in the meantime and get it mint if that's your thing.

If it's any comfort, I was paying close to £600 when I got my first bike (Bonneville) at 32 but it does drop quickly over the first few years.

Back when I was that age we all had grey import 400s. Thinking about how we all behaved, I can see why your insurance quote is so high. Not a demographic I would trust.

I would see it as a silver lining. The import 400s weren't very good 15-20 years ago, and won't have improved with age. Nice to have as a second bike maybe. Chances are that if you strip your one down looking for things to fix you'll easily have a couple of years worth of work in there.

An ER-6 has very similar stats on paper, with the advantage of being much newer and having some aftermarket support for decent suspension. Something in that class should be insurable.

lol £90 here for my 400 which is barely clinging to being a road bike (all mods declared).

As much I hate ER6's and SV's you have an outside chance of getting cover on one being a n00b.

Definitely worth trying a couple Carol Nash or whatever.
A real person might even suggest something could reduce it for example you might agree to a much larger excess £1000 or more if you think an actual accident is unlikely - depending on your usage and style of riding.

Be very careful doing things like that if you've used your real details.

Insurance Co's have a nasty habit of cancelling policies for not declaring facts. Even if they're not real, it's your word against theirs and all they have to do is cancel a policy and you're fucked! £2k odd will look like a bargain.

I remember (many years ago) when I was getting insurance for my first car, I was trying a combination of different ages in a comparison site to work out how much the premiums would drop by in the first few years. When I eventually settled on a car and insurer, when I called them and gave my details they said "oh yes, we've got your quote here. But are you 18, 19 or 20 years old because according to our records you're all of these ages?". Laughing Fortunately they were quite understanding.

The key is to never use your real name email or any contact details, and even your address. Until you are sure you want to take out the policy.

Even better is to use a VPN so that they don't have your IP either. And either clear cookies or use a private tab for the quotes.

Even bigger lols it cost me 1p to add the Bandit 400 to my already stupidly cheap insurance.

But yes as a noob you have chosen possibly one of the worst catagories of bike to try and insure.

Grey import
Rare and expensive to fix even if parts are available
Crashed by young ens'

Like Mr Mylar lover said, go for an ER6 of StillVirgin650 or something of that ilk.

As you get older your bike insurance quotes go down.

But your life insurance quotes go up.

Meh, the obligatory:

Any examples of that happening, people having their policy cancelled as a result of the details given when purchasing the policy not matching up with the details given previously when playing around getting fictitious quotes on a price comparison site?

Caselaw says that third party insurance (the bit you legally need) cannot be cancelled retrospectively under any circumstances.

They can end the policy, sue you to within an inch of your life for their resultant costs, and you'll have to declare the ended policy for the rest of you life but they cannot cancel the policy retrospectively.

So the cops can fuck off if they state that to me.
