Had a bloody good rideout this weekend.

Started off after work on Friday and blasted up the motorway to a bunkhouse near Creinlarrach (near Stirling) which is about 170 miles. Met up with the lads and had a few sherries round a fire.

Fifteen bikes turned out on the run and set off the next morning. Rode to Oban then up the coast road to Fort william. Then went down the Mallaig road to a small country pub at Glenuig. Had an absolute ball, loads of booze, a real party atmosphere.

Spanked its arse the 290 miles back down the road in a oner today.

The weather stayed fine all weekend. My first run up in the Highlands on dry roads this year which shook loose all the cobwebs and knocked the rust off my cornering abilities. Most of the people on the run were on litre plus sportsbikes and the places I could keep up were few so I stuck with my mate on his CB400. Spent a good three hours today with the MZ 'flat oot'.

A good shakedown for the summer in which I learned several things including.

1) My gearing is now WAY too low. Motorway cruising on a bike that does 90 flat out is not fun.

2) I can brake a lot later than I previously thought.

3) The profile of my front tyre is too steep. I have used all the back tyre and there is still a good 1/2" on the edges of the front.

4) Any road in England can kiss my arse, they cannot possibly compare to the consistancy, distance and pure grin factor we were able to do this weekend.

A total of 580 miles, essentially just to go to the pub, but it was worth it. I have a busy couple of weeks coming up at work and that wee blast will see me through it. Meantime, I can sort out the gearing and maybe get a slightly narrower rear tyre so it matches the front better.

If you get the chance to go to the highlands on your bike, just do it. .

Planning on going up norf in a couple of months and really looking forward to it, going via the lakes where the rally was last year (scraping ice off the tent in summer) and yes the roads arround there really are fantastic and well worth the distance!(the rideout looked like this)
if the roads further up are half as good its going to be ace Thumbs Up

edit: hmm thats not the rateing i thought i'd put???

We went round a totally mental little road about 15 miles north of Oban where the A828 goes over a wee bridge at South Creagan. At the roundabout to the south of the bridge you take the first exit and you get on a mad single tracker that goes round the sea loch rather than over the bridge.

Everyone got their bike ariborne at least twice going round it. 15 minutes of complete terror which takes you out about 300 yards further up the road from where you turned off.

You should give it a try next time you are up there.

We stayed at the wigwams just before Tyndrum on friday night. We have been avoiding the Green Wellie stop recently, apparently the coppers are getting far too interested in the bikes and riders that stop there. I think I will be avoiding Glencoe where possible in the summer, even this weekend there were LOADS of bikes on the A85/A82. Quite a few idiots out, only a matter of time before they start scraping far to many people up off that road then the coppers will be out in force. I believe they even had helicopters/spotter planes out later on last summer.

Oh aye, the power rangers were very prominant on saturday.

One in particular was a cbr600rr rider, his overtakes were very slow and almost novice like. I let him pass me just after ehading away from tyndrum and as we got to the roads by loch lomond, I had caught him up and dare I say, he was holding me up. Bandit 12 rider over takes us both and cbr man just feels compelled to follow him. Overtaking stupidly slowly but obviously trying to keep up with him.

Stupid things like that.

I daren't think what it will be like in mid july. Crying or Very sad I'll give your road a wee try, I think I can picture the one you're on about. Thumbs Up No doubt when I get the gps fitted, I can find it with no bother anyway Thumbs Up

I'll need to do some more exploring, way further up north this summer, ones not overly popular with bikers.

Fantastic roads them mate. I was up the same neck of the woods all weekend but not on a bike Crying or Very sad

Dirty weekend away tho!! Laughing

As soon as the bikes back on the road I know exactly where I'm going. Other road to consider is the blast up to Loch Ness north of Fort William. Great road. Seen loads of bikers all weekend and only 1 cop car Thumbs Up

Blody hell you almost got into my back yard. As for English roads being shit, you obviouslt haven't toured the lakes.
I'm thinking of doing a 4 day Scottish tour at the end of May. Gonna go as far north as possible without a ferry.

No dude, I came FROM your back yard. I live in Silloth.

I have been on most of the lakes roads, compared to the ones up in the Highlands, they are shit. The surfaces are poorly maintained and they are hotching with fecking tourists in the good weather. There is nowhere in the lakes (other than the M6) that I could ride my bike totally flat-out for over 100 miles on beautifully surfaced, almost empty, superbly engineered and cambered two lane roads with virtually no danger of running into a copper.
