Flywheel removal

I need to get the flywheel off the NSR, however I have not got a flywheel holder or puller.

There seems to be a fair few different types of flywheel holder, is there anything universal that I could buy? As for the puller, no idea what I am after really Any help would be cool.

I could buy them from Honda, but would need to save up first

Really you need an appropriate size puller. Generally quite cheap.

Using a generic 2 leg / 3 leg puller would make it rather easy to damage the rotor.

I have a moderately universal puller I got from Halfords.

Had to get some different bolts and do a bit of angle grinding to fit the r6, but it worked (though did take quite a bit of force to get off).

Gimme a shout if you want to borrow it, or was about £20 + a few bolts from Drews.


I did try using a 3 leg puller that hooked behind the flywheel, but had no success at all.

So with the correct puller I do not need a flywheel holder?

Just rang up the local motor factors and they said they have a puller that will probably fit and I can borrow it.

You need a holder.

A) the rotor nut is prob thge tightest nut in the bike.
B) the rotor will be nicely jammed onto the end of the crank.

Depending on the design of the flywheel you might be able to bodge it.

When that flywheel comes off it comes off with a nasty crack, so be warned!

A little percussive force usually makes it go smoothly.

Put the flywheel under tension with the puller, then give the flywheel a sharp smack on the side using a mallet. NOT a hammer! Watch you don't catch the casing - it'll crack. Spin the flywheel and do the same in a different position. Tighten puller, repeat. Usually goes well.


I also advise caution with generic pullers. Very easy to damage components and yourself if you're not careful.

The manual displays the following for the flywheel holder, anybody know where I can get one of those from (checked the usual places) or something different that will do the same job?

M&P sell a pull like that for about £6. Not sure if the threads are the right size for the NSR (I have about 5 different pullers of the same design but with different threads for different bikes), but you should be able to get one for not much.

You need to hold the flywheel to undo the bolt in the centre. An air impact wrench normally undoes these fairly easily (although watch out as that is a common one to have a reversed thread) without the need to hold the crank solidly. You could try a strap wrench for holding the flywheel.

Got to remove the rotor on Craigs GPZ and my air impact wrench is not moving that .
