crf300l is going to be 31bhp apparently, up from 22 iirc. Is that something like a 30% increase in power from a 20% increase in capacity? Regardless, it'll have to be gained from a higher rev range, won't it? Not sure if the weight has gone up - I think it might've though, by a couple of kg.

Meanwhile the KLX has gone up to 32bhp - according to some estimates. Weirdly though, clearance is down by a couple of inches.

The crf does look good, mind you. More red, less white.

I think I mentioned this on one of the eco/emission/asthmatic-kittens threads that the new Euro specs mean bigger and better engines. At the time I thought that just would be cars.

Seems like the last hoorah of the ICE will be glorious Smile

That said, I think these bikes will feel dull and flat to a lot of people. For me, they'll be more than adequate for green lanes and local quarries - although I think in some ways a smaller, lighter bike might be more fun. Like the old air-cooled DT175 or something? Something that can lug but also has a fun power-band. These modern low power 4t bikes don't have either going for them, really. That said, I suppose they are least easy to ride (even if they do knacker your back a bit when you pick them up for the fifth time in half an hour).

The colours of the rally crf300 look great but I don't like the front light. The front light on the crf300l is better for looking more conventional.

I would prefer the L too, at £4999 no longer a cheap bike but I would expect £500 at least of that list price.
Might look out for one when they start coming up used in a year or two.
My 250L has been the best all round bike I ever had, but I wouldn't want to ride it all day touring.

Need a spade with that dig? Laughing

In expert hands I often see (in YouTube vids) an old 2-stroke killing it amongst a 4-stroke crowd. But flat and predictable torque can be a boon for an occasional use bike especially when trying to tackle tricky terrain - one less thing to think about.

I actually find mine ok for touring. I typically do 200 mile days with it because I find I stop a lot more, explore more and take more photos from travelling at a more relaxed pace. I really enjoy my L but it needs suspension upgrades. The stock stuff works but with even my light luggage it's definitely over loaded. A tad more power would be nice but not really essential.

I would not buy a CRF250/300L for a pure off road toy. There are far more capable options for similar money, albeit with higher maintenance requirements. The CRF works best as a small adv bike with a few mods, or a basic trail bike if you need to use it on the road to get there.
