hi everyone,

ive never ridden a car or bike before but i have a provisional as i was to start learning to drive a car before covid struck and now i just need a 50cc to get around town etc.

But is it right to buy a new 50cc scooter i need to take a CBT and to buy gloves and helmet which i guess will be best to go in person to have them fitted?

just any info would be amazing and very helpful please.

i was also looking at buying a brand new kisbee or Aprilia SR 50 R as this is what i narrowed it down to.

older than 17. more like 35+

Assuming UK, you're 17+, and able to drive a car, just get a 125. Same CBT requirement as a 50cc. Bonus is you can actually safely use it on normal roads with speed limits over 30. Ability wise, If you can ride a 50, you can ride a 125.

Two and a half bags for a brand new 50cc Laughing Christ; as poor life choices go that has to be up there with the best....worst....whatever.

Forget about 50cc, go straight to 125.

Don't buy new unless you have faith you'll not bin the shit out of it / can afford it. Wouldnt consider finance on a 125.

How old are you?

Any particular reason why you want to wobble around with L plates on a 50cc ped rather than getting a 125 or even getting your full license?

1) Find a school still open doing CBTs
2) Bring provisional licence and learn how to ride
3) Get your CBT certificate
4) Buy a second hand Jap 125 motorcycle
5) Slap on some L-plates and ride off into the sunset*

*Maybe in a year or two after the lockdowns have finished

If you're 16 then what you need to do is...

Ignore all those who say "wait until you're 17" and do your CBT.

Then buy the 50 you want and find a bike shop that's open / look at 'sportbikeshop' on line so you can buy the best gear you can afford and sort some insurance ("ramasis" insurance worked for my teenager).

When you have everything, wait until it's stopped raining and the restrictions are lifted (a bit) then go out and enjoy yourself at 30ish.

Shortly afterwards google "how to de-restrict a SR50"...

If youre 17+ do as above and get a 125
Otherwise you'll get butthurt by some moron telling you "burn it, send it to hell" etc

It's not about speed or tearing about like a mad eejit.
It's about having enough power to pull the bike and rider about comfortably
and keep up with traffic without it sounding like a brush cutter.

i was only going for 50cc as like i said ive never rode a bike before so not sure how it will handle and how fast i cant learn how to be ok with it, that was my main reason and also all the idiots on the roads.

A 125 would be fine.
125’s are not fearsome monsters and assuming you’re not 5 stone and extremely ill you’ll be able to handle it.
The costs are nearly the same to buy , but with a 125 you’ll have a bike that will handle town traffic better than a 50cc ped.

Dooooooooooo iiiiiiiiiitttttttttt!

It's not clear from your initial post and would make a dif6 to my answer. It's looks like you are waiting to do your car test so the question would be are you literally only looking to use scooter as a stop gap until you get a car or do you see yourself continuing to have a bike and car ?

If you are intending to sell scooter as soon as you get car then do your CBT by a cheap second hand 125 scooter or bike. Scooter is obviously much easier to ride as no gears so if that suits you needs for popping around town that may be your best option.

Or

If you see yourself continuing to ride once you have a car get a 125 bike as it's probably likely you will want to go on to do full license at some point.

50cc or 125cc, you still need a CBT. A brand new 50cc scooter as an investment is like putting it all on red knowing black is the only colour on the wheel. 125 scooters are available second hand in reasonable nick for not a lot of cash and you'll recoup most of that when you come to sell it anyway, subject to you not being a berk with it/dropping it/modifying it/all of the above.

Helmet new ~£100 for a decent brand. Gloves, some textiles etc - get on eBay and find some old stuff that fits you fine for cheap. Done.

Even my wife, who still forgets which pedal in the car is the clutch after 16 years of driving, can ride a 125 scooter. You'll be fine.

The fact that you worry about not being able to handle a 125 shows you actually care about your safety and that of others, precisely the opposite of what 50cc were designed for! In its current form a 50cc scooter/motorcycle is a pitiful, crippled thing. Deliberately so due to the target market of 16/17 year old college kids.

If/when you can do a CBT start on a 125. Worst case scenario the school goes "actually, you might be better off on something smaller..." but I think that unlikely.

As a buyer of a brand-new Chinese 125cc motorbike, I can confirm that Easy-X and A100man both told me to get an old jap bike and they were both right.

1. Get CBT,
2. Get old jap bike,
3. Realise 125's are shite,
4. Get full license,
5. ????????
6. PROFIT

If you're 17+ and just want to tootle about town
buy a 125 scooter.
50s are horrible things we hates em we do, we hates em forever

I got a 2018 Honda Vision 110 here a guys put 40,000 miles on
and he's still on L plates ( Deliveroo scoot)
Apart from me sorting a few things out it's probably good for another 20k+ easily.

If want to get into the 'biker' thing, then you'd best buy a geared bike

Don't they make the ANF 125 anymore? It looked halfway between a bike and a scooter. Are there any modern equivalents?

It’s shame there’s not a forum member who could give a 3000 page essay on how ‘time on a tiddler is seldom time wasted...’

(Worryingly autocorrect suggested ‘toddler’ instead of ‘tiddler’. That makes a totally different sentence!!

This is why you want a 125. You will get bullied by cars, lorries etc on a 50cc ped, in anything faster than a 30.
