Do i really need insurance documents for a bike i have no intention of riding just to give them £15 for a disc

i cant be arsed!!

how much will one days insurance be?? £30?

Your one shady bastard Ste!! LOL. I wouldn't even do that and I've done most things. Is there a template in Word for a fake insurance certificate?!?!?!

If you can't get an insurance certificate you be better to offer to take £15 off the price of the bike.

I know what you mean thought, having 12 months rent seams to make a difference to a buyer, even if it's only £15 worth.

Can I just point out that the only people who are going to be so bothered about buying a bike with a full year's tax (all £15 worth) are probably those who have no intention of getting any insurance before they go out and ride it anyway?

Err, I would hardly agree with that. A lot of people have no idea how much tax costs on bikes, and it looks a lot better when any vehicle has full tax and mot on it. Also a lot of people like to buy a bike without the hassles of having to do anything to it which includes buy tax.

Naaaaah, not having that, it takes 2 mins to find out how much tax is on a bike.... If someone knows enough to insure the thing then they're wise enough to know about the price of tax.
No tax is generally a damn good indication that a vehicle is not insured, trust me, i know these things from a professional point of view.

And? If you're selling a bike why does it have to be insured. We're talking about ppl wanting to buy a bike with full tax on. Believe me, ppl don't know these things, why do you think ppl ring an insurance company and take out the first quote they get, because they don't research.

Many ppl may think 12months tax on a 125 is quite a valuable thing to have, and so, as the whole point of this thread is, it's a good thing to have on it when you sell.

Since when?????? only insured to tax it, thats the only way we have a chance of spotting vehicles without insurance,, No Tax.

I think it will be around 95% of vehicles i stop with out of date tax are not insured.

Saw a guy in a farrari up at devils dyke being an arse reving it loads parking up, He didn't have a tax disc on it! wonder if he had it insured! would have like to have had his smile taken off his face!

I stopped a guy from the local chemists last year, he owns an AMG Mercedes, he wasn't displaying a tax disc as he claimed it looked stupid in pink and didn't go with his silver car......... Mr. Green but it did go with his red face when i ticketed him.

If the bike is kept off a public road then you don't need insurance by law, but you'll be a bit stuffed if it gets nicked and is worth something. As for tax, if it's not going to be ridden and is kept off road then apply for a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notice). It will need either that, or Road Tax, or a big fine!!

Most second hand bikes from dealers are sold with tax because as you say the new owner has no intention of getting insured.

Anyone who thinks all the R1's and R6's being ridden around Tottenham, Stoke newington and south east london are insured are living in a fantasy world. A mate of mine who worked for the CPS covering north london estimated that 90% of vehicles were uninsured and or unregistered to the present owner.

I've got a 2 year old Hayabusa sitting in storage on behalf of the Met at the moment, taxed yet unregistered to the present owner. An R6 that cannot be returned to the road, yet again taxed but unregistered. A CBR900 same as above.

The day the law changes and 2nd hand bikes cannot be sold with tax I think the 2nd hand market will drop through the floor and a lot of dealers will go bust.

Good, sooner the better.
Its an outrage to use vehicles without insurance, you'd have something to say if one of them twats you off ya bike and the rider says " hahaha sorry mate, oh and by the way i aint covered so tuff!"
If you can't afford to run it then don't own it, any muppet can own a bike but only those in a position to keep it legal should hit the road with it!!!!!!!!!!!! Twisted Evil

Johnny I don't get what you're saying at all. You seem to be going on about catching ppl without insurance, i've got the point that it's you job! The point im making is why do we have to insure a vehicle we're about to sell? I've got a bike which is uninsured, no tax and I may decide to sell it, it doesn't mean im riding it uninsured, it's sitting in a garage.

A lot of ppl have 2 bikes, one of which they don't ride so is sitting around uninsured and untaxed Rolling Eyes

Phoenix, what i'm saying is that it MUST be insured to tax it!
Why would you want to sell with tax, the only reason someone would back out of a sale due to tax is because they have NO intention of insuring it.
Also if you sell it you MUST fill out and send off the log book to avoid any problems later. I sold my Mondeo a few months back and the new owner asked me to re tax it, i told NO, i offered to knock the £90 off for 6 months tax but i was not prepared to do it for him, that makes sure its insured too.

Hi

Personal view is that VED is a total waste of time. Seems to do little more than provide an expensive way to collect some tax while providing exployment in Swansea.

If we really must have a disk then make it an insurance disk.

With modern systems it would take the police longer to check a tax disk than it would to type the plate into a computer and get back whether the vehicle is MOTed and insured (OK, needs some MOT and insurance systems, but hardly complex systems).

As to having untaxed and uninsured bikes, as this moment we have 14 bikes floating around in various states (ones that are or will be on the road, forgetting ones for spare parts), of which 4 are taxed and MOTed yet 10 are insured. Suspect plenty of people have bikes that are insured yet not taxed and / or MOTed, and plenty of those are quite legally not in use.

Or they do not want to get done for failing to display a tax disk on their journey home, or when it is parked on the road before they have a chance to go and buy a tax disk having waited for the insurance documents to come through).

2 identical vehicles, same condition, same journey but one with tax and the other with no tax but cheaper by the cost of a tax disk then the taxed one, then it is the taxed one that I would buy. Less hassle and less of my lunch time wasted sitting in a queue behind 100 copies of Mrs Miggins all competing to see who can take the longest to collect their pensions.
