A week ago I was going by the beach and saw a lad on a 2004cbr600 with xenon lights. I must say the bike looked great with the lights since it was blue. We had a little talk and he said he had them done for 550$. What do you reckon about the price as I might get them when I get the gixxer. Oh and he had them set in a way that both lights were on not just one Thumbs Up .

For the true 'blue' lights you have to get all sorts of inverters crap fitted to your car/bike I believe.

The bulbs you can get don't come close to the true Mercedes/ Vauxhall Omega ones that have the proper inverters etc. fitted.

Discharge lamps I believe they're called?

Have you found a kit on this side of the pond that will suit a bike?
I have been looking into HID, found plenty of kits but nothing, bikeable.
yet.

I'm sure he has the full system with all the gadgets needed. It's just like the xenon lights you see on cars, I think that's why it's pretty expensive. If I meet up with him again I'll ask him and tell you guys how he had them done.

There is a HID kit available for bikes. One of the journalists in RiDE magazine had it fitted to his BMW R1100S. If I wasn't at work I could have told you how much it cost. From memory it was not far off £300 to supply the kit. Then you have fitting after that. However I don't think they omit the same blue/purple light as you see on cars. Just a sharper, more intense light.

The bulbs you buy off the shelf if places like Halfords are normally just coloured blue. The heat eventually burns the coating off and you end up with just normal white light.

Ahh, so the HID lights for car/bikes are basically just small versions of the HID security lights you see outside.

Would look good with Metal Halide bulbs in, whiter than white light...

Touratech do HID spot and fog lights that fit to any bike. They are basically converted Hella DE lamps. Not cheap but quality never is.
You can also get headlight units for smost bikes, you need space to put the Ballast box too wich in some kits is quite big.

They are not the crap bulbs you buy in Halfrauds these are the proper thing and very VERY fecking bright. The bulbs are around £100 each. There is no filament, the use an Arc-Discharge wich lights Xenon gas sealed in a tube. They burn cooler than halogen and use less power.

The bulb....

No, thats completely wrong.
Halide lamps have a filament which heats up and glows producing the light. Like a normal lightbulb. Security lamps also have filaments.

Xenon HID lamps that are fitted in headlights are gas discharge lamps and do not have a filament.

They have two electrodes which when powered up by an external balast unit produce a current which arcs through the Xenon gas between the electrodes.
The arc heats the Xenon gas in the bulb and causes the gas to glow creating in intense light.
They act somewhat like a flourescent tube in many ways except they are much brighter.

The Xenon bulbs you can buy in Halfords for £25 are not really what they claim to be and the claims on the packaging are misleading. Its argueable if they are actually brighter than a normal bulb.

Yea but those bulbs are pretend Xenon, NOT the real thing! Inferior in every way, a waste of money IMO.
