Hi Guys!

Just been and had my bike mot'd which passed.

However on coming home the motorbike suddenly died on me. I tried to restart it but no life in the battery, put the spare battery on when I got home, as had to push it a mile before getting home, the bike still did not start!

My bike has been away for the winter and not been used since November.

Just been back outside and pressed the start button again and got a slight noise but still not starting.

Can anyone help me as I'm not sure what else to do and at a loss?

Thanks

Do you have a multimeter?

Well you have a short somewhere. A short which runs the battery down in no time should be fairly easy to find . Something has either chafed through or possibly an electronic component in the charging system has failed - try unplugging the regulator. Most circuits are fused, as no fuses have blown it's fairly likely that you will find the problem somewhere near the battery, maybe the feed to the fusebox?

A bulb on 2 lengths of wire is handy to check things .

The bike does not sound dead as stated, so what battery voltage readings have you before fitting to the bike but not straight after charging ? When fitted ? When pressing the starter button?

Sounds like two dead batteries. Most spare batteries are second hand and second hand for a reason.

Skudd is probably right. The most likely, and frequent causes would be the battery and/or charging system - probably reg/rec.

Assuming the bike has been sitting for a while, I would also be checking the connections on the reg/rec plug for corrosion/burning/melting.

A bike will do ~30 miles with the headlight on and the charging system not working.

So, charge battery, get it running. Check across the battery terminals for DV volts. You should be seeing around 13 at tickover, and around 14.5 at 4000rpm. If you have numbers like that, your charging system is working. If not, the reg/rec is likely dead. If you're really unlucky its the alternator.
