Hi all. New around here but not new to motorcycling and a bit of an old git. I haven’t had a bike on the road for about 9 years, last of which was a CBR600RR and used for everything from commuting to track days to hooning around.

I recently moved house to Oxon/Bucks border and, post Covid, will have to start travelling into London (Euston) for work again. I previously got the train in from Watford but I’m now thinking of getting another bike for the commute mainly cos using the train from here would be long winded and expensive.

Things have changed a lot since I last commuted which leads me to my question for anyone that commutes into London via the M40/Westway…. Just how painful is the bit between the Polish War Memorial and Paddington with the average speed cameras? Last time I used that road it was a 70 limit most of the way so being forced to do 30/40 mph for 11+ miles could be a deal breaker for me.

Thanks for reading if you got this far and tia Very Happy

Might be worth the time and money to hire a bike and try the journey out while. 40 mph average speed cameras sound depressing. That's a mostly triple carriageway stretch all the way to Euston Sad

The justification is that one year there were ~60 deaths and they expect to reduce that down to ~40. Here's some news: close the road and you can have zero deaths! I'm sick of this "hair-shirts for all" and "all human life is sacred" crap Evil or Very Mad

You could still filter which is still a time saver. It's the same with the north circular etc. A lot of these speed restrictions are also down to the emissions regulations that London are putting in.

Put it this way, the M1 and Bedford is 50-60mph constantly. Likewise, where I'm living at the moment in the Forest of Dean, to get past Newport on the M4, there's a 5 mile stretch that's a 50mph on a motorway!

I'd say, as much as it might pain you, a CBR500R or a Ninja 400 (be disappointed here, it's not the ZXR400L / H of old) will probably be your ideal commuting tool.

They can do 90-105mph just fine if you need to on the motorways whilst maintaining 60mpg, and when you're in the 40mph zone from the Polish War Memorial, you'd still be making up time whilst not burning a hole in your pocket with the fuel consumption.

I used to get 200 miles on my Gloucester - Bristol commute on my CBR500. All of that from a 15L tank!

It's NOT as bad as you think. Probably adds about another 5 minutes tops by the time you get to Acton and another 5 minutes once your over Ladbroke Grove.

I live in Basingstoke and my office is right next to the Westway. I tried it once, but it's faster for me to go via M3/A30 and do the wiggle around Hammersmith and White city than it is to fight down the A40... But to be fair that does add a LOT Of M25 clockwise work which is usually bad too...

Commuting into London is sh*t whatever I guess?

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

That's odd as the speed limits keep going down which create more emissions not less.

Theoretically, from an energy conversion basis, if you travel at a higher speed, you require more energy to get there. What with the inverse square rule being KE=0.5mv^2, and the critical factor is the velocity squared term, by halving the speed, there's a square factor involved, meaning that you'd require significantly less calories to maintain said velocity. You'll use your brakes less if you maintain the speed, and therefore less heat and wear and tear.

That's basically the mechanics/physics based argument behind it. Less variations in speed mean more fluid flow. You won't have 70mph crew getting held back by 40mph dawdlers.

The downside of the argument is also the fact that you have a higher density of vehicles going through a said point, and therefore time at exposure is increased.

But if you look at it from physics/maths, the logic makes sense!

Fuck maths and physics, think engineering Wink Peak efficiency for a petrol engine is cruising nicely at 60~70mph in top gear.

That being said, all the pollutants are dumped in the atmosphere on the acceleration so a smooth continuous 40mph would be better than stop-start 60mph.

Which way do the average speed cameras face, makes a difference if you're on a bike.

Filtering occasionally is fine.
But for a commute it's stressful and if not stressful then you're not doing it right.

Too many variables to consider to be safe 100% of the time. One prick changes lanes and you can collect a door.
I do filter like a Boss when the opporchancity presents but it's not ever day in day out.

Can't really afford to not concentrate, so it is always stressful.
Sometimes you get a laugh, though.

Last night I came into a town centre during "rush hour", which is nothing nearly as nightmarish as a London rush-hour.
There was a guy on a sporty jap bike sitting behind a row of cars Shocked wtAf? Laughing
He hesitated about pulling out into the filtery bit between cars, so I just rumbled on through ahead of him.

I don't think he was best pleased, cos he refused to let me catch his eye at the next set of lights, and then insisted on taking off and scooting away at all the sets of lights after that. Rolling Eyes Sulky git Laughing

I just ensured that although I was behind him at all times, that I was *noisily* behind him Twisted Evil

If people insist on beating me away from lights, I just make sure I sit behind them at the next set and "waste petrol with my throttle hand" in an annoying fashion.

You got the perfect bike for that. Fit a set of thunderheaders. Set off car alarms; annoy the shit out of those asshats.

Years ago, I had a Bajaj scooter (10 inch wheels, step-through, 4 speed shift on left grip). Used to target Harley riders at traffic lights; like I would make sure that I got as close as I could when waiting out the green. Rev the engine a little, act like I was a wannabe "biker". Ha ha, big ass burly men would fly away from me as fast as they could (sometimes in dangerous fashion). I always caught up with them at the next light for round 2.

Happening all over the country, not just in/around London, using Emissions (NOx?) as the justification. Locally, they introduced a 50 stretch in mid 2019, one of 5 in Wales that year. Perfectly usable at 70, no accidents to speak of, but it gets plenty busy in rush hour.

I dug into the London road we're talking about and a FOI request* revealed they were just interested in road deaths.

*Not me filing it personally! Just one I found via Google.

Much as I like the smaller bikes on the track, commuting 40+ miles would do my nut in... and, also just bought a Tracer 900 Very Happy Completely different than what I've ridden in the past but it's great.

Unfortunately all facing the rear. Guess I'm just gonna have to suck it up as it's still gonna be better than using the train

It already sets off sensitive-little-flower alarms on some jap bikes.
About 10 years ago, I had a beautifully feisty GSX 750 for a few weeks (till it got nicked Crying or Very sad ) : start it up, snowflakey alarms would go off, fucking awesome Laughing kinda why it got nicked, though, I think Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Might invest in getting something shouty on there though, good call. Cool

After I've coughed up for this drive belt at Warrs ... Rolling Eyes Brick Wall Shocked
Thank fuck its payday.

Not buying the sprocket at this point (even more expensive!) cos one of my consorts alleges to have a very nice custom sprocket that might fit (might not) - but if it does, he'll give it to me for a vastly reduced price (and possibly a couple of, errrr ... bacon sandwiches Laughing )

I do that, only in the opposite.

I give it all the billy big bollocks stuff, filter through to the front if at all possible, give them a flirty look, the "Holy shit its a bird!" look flits across their face, so I flash 'em a red-lipsticky grin, maybe another little taunting wrist-action, and when the light goes green, off they go, and I just pootle along behind like the cockteasing little nanna that I am.

I always catch up at the next set. Then I just sit back on their rear corner, pretending nothing happened at all. Laughing

* although I also did it with the non-Harley bikes I had, the Super Tenere really rocked: it used to give them all wood Laughing
