Old in age, fairly new to bikes so excuse me if I'm not making sense!

I have a cg125 , want to change the tank, the original is too big for the cafe racer look

Purchased a tank from ebay, went to fit it and realised its shorter and narrower underneath. Just want to ask what the best workaround is for fitting the new tank before I get hacking!

I can see that the two front mounts will have to be shortened, the rubber mounts cut down. The rear single tank mount needs a nut and bolt, so do I make a new bracket?

Make sure you cut the rear hoop on the frame for that authentic hipster look and make sure someone is filming it when you shit yourself on the first corner.

It is also compulsory to fit the crappiest, cheapest Chinese suspension you can buy so that the bike corners like a pogo stick, remove the mudguards so the rider and electrics get covered in crap whenever you ride it, fit the cheapest, crappiest Chinese lights you can buy and indicators too small to be seen with the naked eye and chop the frame so much that it has the rigidity of a stick of chewing gum.

There's two techniques to altering a tank to fit the frame (don't change the frame to fit the tank!) Both involve a blow-lamp and a lot of swearing.

Option 1. Heat the tank and stretch it apart to create a bigger gap. Fine if you're only chasing a few millimetres otherwise the tank might end up distorted and in the case of cheap Chinese steel - less structurally sound than the roll of tinfoil in your kitchen cupboard - you might pop a weld, create a crease, all sorts really. You'll probably burn the paint off in the process so err, you wanted a different colour anyway, yeah?

Option 2. Heat up the underside of the tank till it's red hot and batter it into the shape you want and then slap on some filler to cover up the peening marks. Only an idiot would do this*

Oh and you'll probably need to carefully cut off the front and rear mounts, realign and re-weld them. Good luck with that.

BTW rubber tank mounts are available in different sizes (internal/external diameter) so I wouldn't waste time cutting then into a different shape.

Alter the tank, not the bike. Then you only risk ruining an ebay tank and not a bike frame.

So you are going to need to fabricate brackets that make the tank fit the frame.

Fron memory, the rear fitment is pretty straightforwards, you'll be able to fold up and bolt a plate to it. The front ones are cups that hook onto two rubber buffers on the frame itself so those may need grinding off and re-welding somewhere more sensible.

But you say the tank is too narrow? So does the tunnel fit down over the spine of the frame? If not, you may need to do some "percussive maintainance" to the tank tunnel.

I was assuming it's one of those brand new £40-odd "cafe racer" tanks that is advertised with that really annoying sort of listing that has the exact same item listed under every known make and model of motorcycle so you have to wade through 9 pages of them to find anything that isn't one.

High time they either banned that shit or make it so you can blacklist sellers.

Indeed. I've spent out on service parts for my old Skoda, the front brake pads being mentioned on the last two MoTs Shocked The same brake pads listed over and over and over with different car names and yet when you click on the listing it still has a drop-down for "does this fit my car?" which it usually doesn't Sad
