Yamaha coming out next year with a parallel twin sportbike based on the MT07 engine platform; they will call it the YZF R7.

Shame the original R7 was limited to homologated exotica - although Yamaha were already doing well out of the R6 and R1 they could have pulled the same (successful) trick as Suzuki and included a 750 in the line up.

MT-07 naked street bike - check
XSR700 neo-retro bike - check
Tenere 700 light ADV - check
Tracer 700 sports tourer - check
R7 sport bike - inevitable Wink

Given the original MT-07 design was pretty much a full on, start from scratch affair Yamaha are certainly rinsing all they can from their investment. Can't blame 'em really.

Would have loved one of the original R7's. One damn good looking bike. If they made that exact bike again at sensible prices I'd totally have one.

Totally agree, I'm drooling just looking at that picture.

Yamaha would have sold shed loads of R7s if they had produced it in volume and done the necessary tweaks needed to get the price down.

Suzuki had already proved that a 750 sportsbike was still a successful sales proposition in the late 90s (and beyond) with the GSXR.

It would have been worth it for Yamaha just to pay off the R7's R&D costs alone.

Sounds like a no-brainer - so why didn't they do it? Shocked

A friend of mine has an R71. R7 chassis with a tuned R1 engine, flatslides etc etc. Even today it is a great bike. If i remember correctly the R7 road bike was only 100BHP. I cannot get my head around the money these things command these days. Crazy

There is a mint zero miles R7 on Ebay currently going for 60k.

R71 sounds very intriguing Smile

Looks mostly MT07 frame still, R6ish tank and fairing + front end. Rear shock looks like mt07 unit.

Honestly, for a sensible price it might do alright to be honest. Not sure about supertwin/mini twin rules but might be up being a mainstay for that class?

Blame the French (they had a 100 odd bhp limit at the time).

It actually had eight injectors, but only four were working from the factory and you needed the YEC ECU to get the other four working (even then I think they were only about 120-bhp from the crate). A pity really, but it we never meant for massive sales.

If I recall they only did about 500 examples worldwide and most were destined for the race track.

The new R7 will probably be a great road bike and they'll sell loads. Would be nice if they'd called it something else though. That said, most people buying it probably won't know what the original R7 was.

Looks alright, for a sports bike. But they all look the same to me anyway Laughing
Is a parallel twin going to seem a bit asthmatic for a sports bike though? Oh well, I suppose not, they do 125s, 300s etc in sports bike guise.
