 |
|
Just been looking around at different bikes....
Since binning mines I've been trying to put it back to very good condition but the lure of getting another bike and selling this one is constantly drumming around in my head......
Time it's put back together and I get the summer out of it, that will be me 1 year down the line on a 600 but 2 bikes that have caught my eye are a Gixxer 750 (K-model) and more recently a Honda Fireblade, the 954RR version.
Just wondering if the step up would be a bit much after a year in the saddle of a 600? I've had a pop on a 98 R1 all be it a very quick blast and found the straight line speed to be amazing but actually living with that extra 30-40 bhp every ride.
Or should I spend those extra pennies learning how to ride my 600 a little better round tracks and extra training
Anyone else recently stepped up a class? ____________________ Old bikes >>> https://www.bikepics.com/members/cc123/ |

I believe the 750 would not be too much of a step up just abit more mid range grunt.
I would personally stay stick with the zx6r because we all know they are the best. |

I love my Ninja but I love this even more......
You can see why I'm seriously considering getting a bike like this! ____________________ Old bikes >>> https://www.bikepics.com/members/cc123/ |

You'd be surprised at how little difference you notice. It takes a lot of horses for the average rider to notice the difference. A racer would notice even a small difference in Horse power but once your around the 100 bhp mark it takes a whole herd of the bugers for the likes of us mere mortals to notice a difference. It makes me laugh when you hear the bollox sprouted about how the R1 is so much more powerful than the gixer or the blade or vis-versa etc. There's no way you are going to notice half a dozen horses when you are talking figures in excess of 160 bhp unless you are a track god ____________________ https://hyperbikes.forumsplace.com/ |

Yes but even a 98 R1 felt so much quicker than my Ninja on that short blast.
Even the extra torque would make a huge difference to normal riding. I'm 25 in a few months with a years NCB, the insurance wouldn't be too bad and I'm guessing the bike would be near bomb proof being Honda.
Also, I plan doing some touring and long distance runs so it has to be reliable as well as a sports bike. ____________________ Old bikes >>> https://www.bikepics.com/members/cc123/ |

I think the K model 750's looks better than a Blade. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Hmmmm I used to think the K4 750 was the best looking bike about (bar the MV Augusta) but I'm really into Blades at the moment. Not only do they look good but I've yet to read one bad review on the 954RR yet. For a 2/3 year Y/O example your looking at 5k and for a Gixxer its about the same for a K2 or 3 model.
Was reading in Two this month on the used test that Suzuki's loses that new, tight feel to them very quickly but the Blade was still ace even on a 3 year old example. ____________________ Old bikes >>> https://www.bikepics.com/members/cc123/ |

I went a step up not so long ago went from a cbr125r to a cbr600fi which was a pretty big step although i did have to have restrictor a kit on it, i say go for the blade as you'd be regretting it if you didn't while you had the oppertunity to! |

Well if we are talking about step ups I am going from a 5BHP 50cc Moped to a 600 Bandit, albeit restricted to 33BHP. Still a jump though. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Go for it Colin you know it makes sense .
That Blade is stunning in those colours.
I think I'll be staying on my D6 for a for another couple of years and do some track days to try and get my skill up and gain some experience. But after that I would like a 1L bike dont know what one yet but dont think I could get a Jap machine. Prob try for a Millie or 999 (Lots of saving to be done then ) ____________________ Current; 10' Aprilia Dorsoduro 750.

Well i know for a fact a more powerful bike would not make me a better or faster rider. If i was serious about doing alot of trackdays, id far rather fit a set of lightweight wheels and some decent suspension kit to my 600, and maybe just a full race system tuning wise, than get a bigger bike.
But i think for road riding at low speeds a bigger bike can be easier, more relaxing to ride, if not any quicker due to the limitations of how quick you can ride safely on the road.
If and when i swap my zx6r, then i wouldnt change for anything less than a litre bike, and id like a big torquey engine that has much more bottom end and midrange grunt even if its at the expense of top end power. The new Speedtriple and Benelli TNT are examples of the sort of power delivery i want in my next bike, but i wouldnt change to a 750cc sports bike as its not enough of a step from a 600 to feel really torquey i feel. Also if i was say going to get an R1, then id chose an 02/03 version over the new bike, as its long stroke engine has more bottom end power than the newer more powerful but revvier engine in the 04/05 bike, and having more bottom end matters far more to be than an additional 10-15bhp, when you already have a 150bhp engine to start with.
I suspect the new GSXR1000 will be the same in that to get the extra 15bhp it has over the 03/04 model that they will have sacrificed a fair amount of bottom end power to replace it with more unecessary power at the top. |

Depends what your goals are. I agree with your comments about a bigger bike not making you a better rider, but not so much with you not changing for anything less than a litre bike. One reason I stayed away from a litre bike (other than insurance) was the huge power which many journalists have stated is far too much for the road, and in some cases even, dull as you don't have to work the bike. Sitting in top gear and rolling the throttle on and off using the torque isn't much fun to me. In terms of torque increases, the Gixxer 750 represents a 20% jump over the ZX6R (52ftlt to 63ftlb) and as I said before, it most definitely is very noticable (I have both bikes sat in my garage).
The Benelli TNT puts out 86ftlb, but so it should - it's has a 1130cc engine, weighs 200kgs and is pretty expensive. I do like the speed triple (which also chucks out a hefty 78ftlb) but my vote in this arena would go to the KTM Superduke (118bhp, 74ftlb, 184kgs and gorgeous!). All of these bikes will suffer in outright speed against a sportsbike, but it comes down to what you want I guess, as you'll also take a buffeting at any speed for any amount of time. I'd still like a Superduke as a plaything though... |

hmm still need to get the Ninja fixed and sold first! You should sell the D6 too, get a Duke and we can make Gordon very jealous!!!
| Quote: | I had a ZX636 and went from that to the Gixxer, and don't let anyone else tell you different - you will notice the power. |
Thats what I was saying with the R1 I was on, mental top end and the front wanting to lift more on hard acceleration. I think I've got used to the power (both delivery and acceleration) on my 600. Not bored with it or think I can make the full use of it everytime but it's always nice to have that little bit more in the mid range.

I don't think it will make me any better but stepping up would most definitely keep me content in not wanting another bike for a very long time. I do plan on doing a few track days this year but I think rather than spend a shed load on tuning my 600, some proper tuition and training will be cheaper and help me be quicker on a standard bike than the mods ever could.
