Anti virus software, worth it?

I have Norton 360 and the yearly subscription is coming up and it's £90 which seems steep to me. Is this stuff worth it?

I've never paid for antivirus and don't even put on a seperate firewall/antivirus on my windows 10 machines.

I don't even consider it on the android stuff.

The only problem I have with it is each renewal time, negotiating my way past all the 'click here to pay ££" buttons and trying to find the teeny tiny links for the free version...

Unless you are remarkably thick and think the green 'download more RAM now' buttons are real, Windows 10 default stuff will keep you going.

The inbuilt defender thing in Windows 10 should be enough, just keep an eye on it I have seen it somehow disabled on one of mine I think it didn't complete an update and/or was affected by one of the constant W10 updates.
It is more than enough to stop an uninvited .exe loading and combine with a sensible browser like Chrome you would have to work hard to get a virus.

I used to have one of the free ones with XP but haven't bothered since Windows7 which was also Ok on its own IMO.
Surely most people now can recognise dodgy emails and won't open attachments or click links in them - about the only way you might be caught out.
A paid for antivirus isn't going to stop you being caught out by phishing sites if you can't spot them yourself.

Pfft. They'll be paying for computers next, I get my PCs from skips.

I use linux. I have a copy of windows 10 in a virtual box for the one thing I can't do which is update Mrs stinkwheels garmin watch.

Anti-virus is a bit old-hat, Windows' built-in offering is perfectly adequate. Deluxe Firewalls on the other hand...

Most dubious software (including viruses) try to access resources that they shouldn't much like strange Android app permissions so I personally find a firewall that alerts to such things very useful. However I've been through Glasswire, Comodo and now ZoneAlarm and they all have severe side-effects on system performance

I use windows' own av plus malwarebytes.

Malwarebytes does pick up on stuff that most av programs miss.

I've just recently renewed my Eset Secuirity Suite, for half that price. I changed for Zonealarm to Eset when I bought a dedicated 64bit system, that was quite a while ago. Only used free software when I was a student (well you had avenues ).

Wouldn't trust windows defender as far as I could throw it. Software vendors that specialise in security are my prefered way, rather than jack of all trades microsoft.

A few years ago I got a nasty virus that I spent days trying to get rid of, and emailed Eset, a guy emailed me a contact number and remotely installed their software and fixed it. Couldn't believe it, all within a few hours.

If you have nothing on your PC that you care about or can't reinstall ina hour or so, there's no need for security.

Stick with Windows Defender. It used it be crap, but since the last couple of years it very often comes out on top of the reviews.

Up until the start of last year I used to run Webroot, which was really lightweight but looking online the reviews of it just tanked, so I've just been running Defender ever since. No issues whatsoever.
