Honda FX 650 blinkers are reversed on dashboard

Hi everyone,

I just bought a Honda FX 650 which is really fun to drive around. I've just realised that the blinkers are reverse on the dashboard (when left, blinkers blinks left but the right dashboard light lits up and vice-versa).

But this happen only when the engine is running!? If the engine is off and I just put the contact, then it works fine as expected.

What do you think? Is the dashboard badly wired, but then why would it work when engine off? Bad relay?

probably not a bad relay. more likely miswired relay connections.

This. The question is, why is it different when the engine is on or off...

Suggests it may be earthing via a wire that is only live when the engine is running. So when the engine is running, it's earthing via the opposite side indicators. I wouldn't be surprised if the opposite flashers are glowing slightly when you put them on when the engine is running.

I'm going to take a stab in the dark here and guess this is a model where the headlamp comes on when the engine is running. If so, I'd guess the flasher repeaters are earthing back through the headlamp when the ignition is off but are earthing back through the opposite indicator when the engine is running.

Anyway, the thing to do would be to ensure the repeater bulb earth connection is good. The simplest way would be to connect an extra wire from them to a good frame earth, even if it's only temporarily to confirm this is what the problem is. Most hondas use a dark green wire for earth and orange or blue wires for flasher feeds.

Try swapping the bulbs.

Seriously though, likely bad earth, find and clean any contacts. I've had a similar thing happen on my car with the rear light assembly going all Christmassy if the lights were on and I indicated. After cleaning and repluging the earths, and the connector under the dash, all was fine.

20 year old bike so probably badly wired during some 'improvements' as their function is simple enough

It's a probably a really good guess, I'll check earthing today and see what's going on, thanks a lot for the help and detailed info, much appreciated.

I'll keep you updated!
