Idly looking at what the next bike might be, obviously hundreds of options, and the 821 Monster has pinged up on my radar. Compared to the ER6 it’s not insanely more powerful, although it still makes for a hefty upgrade. Then the new one came along and despite being 937cc it is only 188Kg.

Obviously it’s a shed load more money that I don’t think I have, but the question is which would be better? Newer model is lighter, more electronics, 2hp more and an allegedly better riding position, but sitting on the new one and it feels a bit ‘plastic’.

Is the 821 destined to be a dinosaur or do we think it might be more of a future classic?

Or are they both a POS and I should look at something else?

I went looking for one in my last bike hunt and decided against one - partly because servicing / ownership tax, partly because like you I found the 'quality' to be of a plastic fantastic nature, and partly because I couldn't actually get any dealership to give me a bloody test ride on one.

No idea why, it was just impossibly difficult.

So much for my ‘future classic radar’, Bike magazine has just awarded bike of the year to the new monster.

What’s the depreciation like on new bikes? Are we at 50% down after 3 years or is it less? Very Happy

Used market is sky high at the moment. I can't see it lasting though.

You're right, but then I thought it wouldn't last about house prices. Rolling Eyes

Also, while it seems to be true about some areas of the used bike market, it's not all. Decent used VFRs are still pretty much the same price they've been for the last 15 years. I recently bought my street triple for pretty much what I would have paid pre-lockdown.
