My stone age tumble drier finally popped it's mortal coil last night. After about a dozen repairs (total exaggeration of course, maybe 3) the motor is making sparkly bits and the smell of electrical death has permeated the house.

Wifie has left it up to me to replace, probably so she can moan I bought the wrong one.

From what I gather there are 3 types. Vented, condenser and heat pump and they go from £200 up to space shuttle prices.

By then I lost the will to live.

I have zero interest in white goods. I have zero interest in going to Currys to look at white goods or hear some pimply faces 'expert' extorting me to by something with more processing power than Amazons mainframe just to dry clothes. I have zero interest in loading up the car with one,

Being BCF I'm sure there must be some person here with a fetish about tumble driers that can tell me what is good and what isn't. Why I should buy it and where from. etc.

I have a horrible feeling the washing machine will be next as they were bought at the same time.

We've got a Bosch Logixx vented dryer. We're trying to work out how old it is, I think it predates 2004. 2 person household, gets used 2-3 times a week, never had any problems with it, just does what it says on the tin. If it died, we'd replace with another Bosch.

As for where from, I'd go with John Lewis - they price match, and you usually get an extra year's warranty over other outlets.

If you have to empty water from a giant bottle thing you have a condenser and may as well go for same again, they give useful heat into the house half the year why vent that outside.
Try Currys and Ao.com they are usually selling the same models with different labels on anyway.
At least they were when I got last fridge freezer.
Ideally get them to take old one away included.

I reckon a vented tumble dryer accounts for the majority of my electricity bill but it’s a necessary evil. It’s probably low down in the official efficiency ratings but that means it’s actually applying some drying heat and not just spending hours tumbling clothes in cold air.

You could go full 21st Century retro-with-a-twist and get a heated mangle at a bargain price.

We have a heat pump one. We can’t have a vented one as it is located in the middle of the house. We use it a lot (kids) so wanted something that’ll get the job done quickly. It does mean when they fail, if it’s the heat pump side of it that goes there’s little a DIYer can do to fix it (this happened to our last one). It also means mega-money to buy. But it does well - Bosch for us, matches the washing machine.

Now there's just the two of us in this big 'ole house . . .

It makes much more sense for us to dry our washing on the several clothes horses that occupy a spare bedroom & block my access to the cubby hole.

Sit a de-humidifier amongst them & let battle commence. Much, MUCH cheaper than a tumble drier.

What sort was your old tumble dryer? Vented, condenser, etc. Is the dryer in the house, garage, extension, shed? How damp is it where you live?

For example, I've had two vented tumble dryers. First was in a flat, in the kitchen - bread went mouldy within days 2nd is outside in a shed so how good it is at venting is neither here nor there.

Oh and lots of stuff is much better dried au naturel. Shake out a damp T-shirt and hang it up: cost-free, no ironing required

Tumble dryers are the devil. Cost a bomb to run no.matter what science they employ.
I have a Bosch condenser.
Supposed high efficiency.
Not used much, only in emergency.
Even though they condense they still produce a lot of humid air so a window should be left open to vent.

Another thing, some condensers use the cold tap water to cool/condense the humid dryer air.
I think mine's uses magic coz it's not connected to a cold tap supply.

I think the condenser device is a fan cooled element.

Move to the Sahara desert.
Two or four poles sunk in the sand.
Clothes line.
Bag of pegs.
Your shite will be bone dry within 20 - 25 minutes after hanging out.
That's why women love Arab men.

I havent got a dryer, and havent had a clothesline for years.
I just hang em on the doors, radiators, backs of chairs, clothes hangers over the bath.

Much like dishwashers, I'm never quite sure how to use a clothes dryer properly, cos I don't own them often enough for it to become routine.

I'd like to go back to pegging clothes out on the line.
I like hanging out in the garden with clothes flapping.

On the subject of other white goods, my microwave died about a month ago. But I spent a week (dogsitting) in a foodie house where there wasn't one, so now I am not bothered about getting one again.

I generate a lot of dirty clothes and my garden is in shade for 6 months of the year. Got a beko heat-pump drier 10 years ago. Worked out that the break-even point in terms of saving in electricity useage vs the extra cost was about 5 years so I'm quids-in.

It's worked flawlessly, doesn't make the room all humid (it gives off some heat but not much). I plumbed in the drain into a T-piece on the washing machine drain so i don't need to empty the reservoir thingy. It knocks itself off when it detects the load is dry so rarely does the full cycle, you set the dryness setting to iron dry (slightly damp), cupboard dry (normal dryness) or extra dry (shrunk). So it's stayed ont he same setting throughout.

Totally happy with my purchase.

An eco consultant guy who came round to do a thermal survey on our house said one of the most energy efficient ways if you can't dry outside is to set up a line/clothes horse in a small room with a dehumidifier.

Drying clothes? I've go no idea how the damn things get washed, let alone dried in Che Nobby. They just turn up in the drawers and wardrobe clean and dry.
