Angle grinder proof D/U lock

The thing with a kickstarter is, people can make whatever claims they like, but it doesn't mean it's true. What worries me with this is that there are plenty of commercially available locks which claim to be angle grinder proof or whatever, but then break with a hammer attack or other type of attack. Hardness usually means it's brittle and flexible often means cuttable. If it were possible to produce a perfect unbreakable unpickable lock don't you think someone would have made one?

no lock is unpickable by the right person, but the vast majority of thieves have no knowledge of how to lock pick

this looks to have plates of this grinder proof substance all the way around, their is a video along with it

the only other lock i know which claims to be grinder proof is bloody huge, the shape/size isnt even usable, this one is a much more normal size and could work through a wheel

All taken as granted, but grinder proof doesn't mean hammer proof, and who knows if this will actually do what they say it will do?

If it puts off the TWOCer enough to steal someone else's bike though, it's done the job.

If I was forced to leave my bicycle somewhere that needed a 200 quid lock, I doubt I'd be using a bike that was half as expensive as the lock though.

Not really sure why they went the Kickstarter route, but I think they have used it in the past with other products in their range

It's pretty good, we tested one with a mains grinder in my garage a couple days ago. It can be grinded but its a fair bit of faff, took 5 discs - which I doubt anyone is going to bother with on the side of the road. I was messing round for 20 mins.

Even then, because they've made it so the D doesn't twist in the main lock body you may have to make a second cut to get it off if its over a part of the bike more than 20-30mm thick.

I imagine in the real world the thief would move on after their first disc dissolves

2kg and ~£250 sounds painful.

I'm intrigued as to why Hiplock have gone for the Kickstarter route. It drums up free publicity and discussion? It's not as if they need the funds to be able to manufacture the locks, why would they choose to offer it on Kickstarter?

It’s not the first time they’ve done it, iirc.

They aren’t a big company. I imagine doing it this way gets extra publicity and a big order book upfront so it de-risks and brings down the cost of a large manufacturing run.

I don’t know though, just speculating.

Things have probably moved on now, but in the olden days, people would freeze locks with an aerosol before hitting them with a hammer. I wonder if this one has had the Freeze-Free test?

As with all locks, they slow the the thief down, that's it. They don't stop a determined thief and the damage caused just taking the bike is enough to write them off. I use a variety of security devices, but I have still had bikes stolen, some have been found with some of the security devices still working, but the damage to the bike has been extensive and the bike a write off.

Better than nothing. Unless you tell your insurance you have one, and it gets nicked that one time that you didn't apply it. Or you forget it's there and ride off

On the front wheel though, you'd lift the bars and walk the bike on the rear tyre into a van with a mate if you really wanted it.

On the rear would be better. Even better would be able to fix it to an anchor but on a motorcycle that's going to be nigh on impossible.

It's a shame bike manufacturers aren't building security locking pins into the frame by default.

I love the irony of this.

Spend £1000s on a 'weight weeny' push-bike to save the last gram then spend £200 more on a 2kg lock which you have to carry around with you..

I'll stick with my gas-pipe sturmey archer 3 speed.
