I use cable repair kits or just go and buy a new cable, always have.

However when I was a teen just getting into bikes and didn’t have a lot of money, this video/knowledge would have been a very useful thing to know.

I'd go with brass ends and silver solder for ultimate longevity.

Agreed, but sometimes you have to go with what you’ve got.

I might have to have a go at making one of those.

I'd recommend dipping the end of the cable in #3 bakers fluid before soldering. I'd also use 60:40 lead tin solder rather than pure lead.

Also easy to make a birdcage tool so the end looks like this:

£10 for a cable sounds nice but not always an option for classic bikes. You're also in pickle if you need longer cables.

Did you not improvise when you were a kid?
Most dads and grownups had a blowtorch in their garden shed.
I had an old set of mole grips, (my portable grippy vice thing)
Bit of old scrappy metal could be obtained from the local dump/tip.

I’m sure if I had of asked my dad to drill out a bolt for me and explained what I was doing, he would have helped .

All well and good buying a brand new cable, I do that myself.
What do you do on a late Sunday afternoon when you need the bike for Monday morning.
Or your bike is some strange and unusual bike with very few spares available out in bike-world.

For my latest project bike's bespoke throttle cable I used a screw-on cable end from one of those kits, and smothered it in silver solder by first dipping it in flux and then heating the end over the gas cooker, and then dabbing it with the silver solder strip. That's the nice thing about having a gas cooker. You can save the blowtorch for winter barbecues. Crude, but it works. I'm very impressed with the strength of silver solder.

Well my dad didn't have any of that shit. I don't know any relatives who have any of that either except maybe an angle grinder and mole grips. I would have had to have bought other things which totally negated the cheaper aspect of it.

I didn't have a motorbike when I was a teenager, but I did have a car and many times it was fucked and I just had to get about by public transport when it was out of action, if I had a bike it would have been the same.

Hell, I am a grown ass man now and I don't personally own any of the tools used in that video either (except for the hand tools). I have access to all of it at my work but I don't own any of it personally and thinking about my friends and peers I can't think of a single person who has a pedestal drill at home.

If you had the means to do it fair enough but I doubt a significant proportion of people would.

I think you’re missing the point here.
You don’t need an angle grinder to cut a groove in a bolt, a hacksaw and a file should be sufficient.
You don’t need a pillar drill to drill a hole in a bolt, with a bit of a steady hand and a bit of luck, an electric drill and a bench vice should see the job done.
No specialists tools and equipment used so far..
Blowtorches are not so expensive that the ordinary man can’t afford them.

My point being: it’s better to have the knowledge and abilities and not need them than being stumped because you don’t know how.

My bench vice = £3 at a car boot sale.
My bench = a chopped and hacked/ modified old dining table.
My blowtorch = I seem to remember paying £15
My electric drill = I was given that years ago and it’s still going.

All the things I’d need to do that cable fix.
And all the kit was already in my shed and gets used for other jobs.

As for a pillar drill? A really useful piece of kit .

Just for info, a good place for relatively inexpensive custom cables and cable making parts is carrotcycles.co.uk

I make a lot of custom cables for things like my big bullet where I have a honda C90 twistrip connected to an Amal carburettor.
