Keeway superlight 125 doesn't start with a kickstart

Hi,

I have a keeway superlight 125 and its an absolute mess.

I'm trying to start the engine with the kickstart and nothing happens.

I've put some petrol in the head where the spark plug is and tried to kickstart it and still nothing happens.

The engine doesn't even make a noise that indicates that its gonna start!

I was under the impression that to kickstart a small engine bikes (anything under 250cc) engine, you don't need a battery!

but not sure! I do. have a battery but I think its flat.

Do I need a battery to kickstart the bike?

what other issues I should be looking for?

I have a brand new spark plug as well.

Stick some jump leads on from another battery (or even car, just don't start the car) to test... Also means you can use the starter and save some hassle while troubleshooting spark etc.

I assume the Keeway is Fuel Injection? Therefore you're living in the past. Sorry to say.

You need a battery to prime the pump for the fuel injection. If the electric pump can't pressurise the fuel line then it ain't going to start. Furthermore, the ECU is a computer that needs to regulate the injector on the end of the fuel line so that needs power too. It's a synergistic system that all times together.

I hate it. But I've decided to try and live with it rather than die from it with my current bike. Though I'm hoping to get something like an MZ or a Bantam in future to balance out the tech a bit.

Do you know someone with a little jump pack or a small car you could jump from? Or otherwise try and get some juice into that battery with a charger? The battery is probably knackered but it might be good enough to get it started once it's been on a charger or solar panel for a while.

Your best bet for a simple 125 is an older Honda CG pushrod motor with a carb. That's what I'd aim for anyway. Otherwise you're going to have to get with the times and learn a bit about the fuel injection.

It's kinda a love / hate relationship. Fuel injection is good, until it's not. Then it's a twat to fix because there's 101 sensors to go wrong and you've got to figure out which one it is. In the good old days it was just a matter of taking the carb off, cleaning it and putting it back on. Sorted. Those days are almost gone. At the same time you might get a fuel injection bike that works for years without a hitch.

Next we'll have these electric bikes where touching the electrodes could literally vaporise you like something out of star trek. That'll be the next thing we've got problems with here I'm sure.

Have you tried tickling the carb, checking the points with a fag paper and twisting the throttle like mad as you kick it?

The early superlights were carb and the later ones had a retro-fit EFI system. I don't think you can kick either one over without a battery...

Get a battery and then see if it at least has spark when you kick it over.

What happened to the Nevada 125?

Check over all the safety switches. I recall one time I couldn't start my Superlight so I resorted to kicking it over... left in gear, doh!

IIRC there's the neutral gear switch, clutch and kickstand.

<addendum> oh, and if it's the EFI version check if someone hasn't taken out the loop-back plug from the immobiliser socket
