Has it still got some grit in it? I'm not a fan of changing plugs for the sake of it, so usually clean, regap, and put them back in.

Had a couple of those over the years, I put some sand in one of them out of desperation to use it. Not brilliant, but do work. They are a bit crude and would be better with a bit of refinement, but its what you got then for the money.

They work by crude impeller creating enough turbulence to make the grit airborne, then directing it up a little chute towards the end of the plug. I used to assist by moving the plug in the rubber socket up/down left/right to make sure the chute directed it into all areas, and occassional shake to assist the grit in getting airborne.


I've tried buying one a little while back but the new design is airline driven with a cloth bag, didn't like it.

A garage I worked at in the early seventies had one. I made the mistake of turning it on before inserting the plug and got both eyes full of fine grit Sad

I’ve never seen these I’ve always used the kind with the bag hooked up to a compressor. They work well but kinda let sand dust fly out.

Back in the days when everyone was not disposable.
I used to have a local ex mechanic that used to work on my bike. Everytime I had an issue he would actually fix the bike. Be it my ignition when it got broke by a theif. My panniers and a few bit and bobs that I cant remember. I think he also cleaned out my alternator as well.


These days everyone is basically just a fitter.

When I was a kid we use to trek up from Cornwall to the Ideal Home Exhibition and it was wall-to-wall with this crap. My dad either bought it there or the Royal Cornwall Show (county fair.)

When I went to sea my Gran bought me the Ronco buttoneer because, to quote her, 'sewing buttons on shirts was womens work' and as I wasn't married yet I would need help if a button came off my shirt. Laughing

I still use a short length of copper pipe as a guitar slide. Thumbs Up The quality is about on par with my playing ability so all is good.
