Getting hung up on politics is probably the worst thing people can do, or so it seems to me. And I don't think the UK is particularly bad for it. Look at the US right now - I think thy've got things far worse than us in that regard.
It's worth pointing out the not-so-good things, talking on the large scale, if you can do something about it. Me, I can vote when it's time, that's it. Again, worry about your own little sphere of influence, try to make things better there.
Perspective is needed.
Bipolar disorder? Yeah, that's enough to make you depressed ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

In the way you mean a soul, I agree. Perhaps we need a new word? Go on Nobby, new words and redefining old ones seems to be the preoccupation of you lefties these days. Give us a word for a secular soul. There's a rabbit hole to disappear down!
But when I tell you you're soulless, you know what I mean ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

No, that's about understanding the feelings and experience of others. That's not what I'm talking about. The way I think of "soul", or whatever we're going to call it, is more about something of personal experience. Individual experience. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Consciousness. |
I don't think so. That term is a bit more all-encompassing for personal experience as a whole. You can be conscious whilst not experiencing any particular feelings or emotions. "Soul" in my mind has more to do with those latter two.
What does it mean to appreciate beauty? To appreciate art or music? You can look at a painting and not feel any emotional response at all. You are conscious of it, but it prompts no particular response. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

That would be a feeling of calm. |
I don't think so Feelings are within consciousness. You can be conscious of your state or feeling of calm. Your function of consciousness doesn't change if you are feeling pain instead. It's just something different you're conscious of. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Well, to coin a phrase, that’s just your opinion. |
Ok, we have different feelings that we experience, right? Is it a different person experiencing each of them?
And something else to consider (which touches on the topical question a bit more closely): what makes 'you' you? Aren't you just a part of the indivisible collective?
And btw, I'm tempted to rate your post as abusive with that image! ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Now you’re talking about individual responses to experiences, in which people may differ. |
So what is your definition of consciousness? You're the one putting that forward as what I've been talking about. I'm saying that's not it, because consciousness is simply awareness. It doesn't tell you what to be aware of.

You ARE special. No one else has had, or ever will have the exact same experiences as you. You are quite unique in that regard. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I take it when you die you've left instructions to destroy all your possession and execute anyone you've ever met - especially your decedents. You might not personally consider it immortality but your life will leave an imprint on the world. |

Yes I can. And I proved it by doing it
Consciousness is not what I'm talking about, nor empathy. I can't help it if you don't understand what I am talking about. I've done what I can to explain it. Perhaps it is my failure that you don't get it still.

I think the word "soul" is ok, I think you do really know what I'm talking about (maybe not Nobby, he truly is soulless ). And maybe it is something that can live on after our deaths, in the sense of in the memories of others who knew us and their feelings for us, as Easy alluded to. But something tangible that remains? In the sense of an actual life after death? No, I'm not down for that. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
