Desperate for a big estate car I bought a 2005 E320 CDI estate. Overnight the rear suspension sinks on both sides, but pumps up properly whe I start the car. Anyone had any experience diagnosing and fixing this?

Maybe I am wrong, but this seems like an overly specific and niche question to be posted on a motorcycle forum Laughing tried any Merc forums? Just Googling it brings this as the first thing:

One of my lads had the 320 avante garde estate
Lovely motor but the body was rust prone as I recall
Polycarbonate headlight lenses needed a polish from time to time and
when the cps went wonky we couldn't shift it they had to drop the engine to get it out!!!
Injectors were a fucker remove too

Check out this guy for tips

They have it on Discoveries too. The bags become permable and lose pressure. A quick check is to spray WD40 or similar on the bags, if they are leaking then there is a mass of bubbles on the surface of the 'airbag' which proves its permeation and new ones are required. ' Course it could be a leaky pipe.

Not the end of the world if it's dropping overnight, it varies from car to car, some stay up for days, others don't.

If you stick your head in the rear arches with the engine running, you can sometimes hear air escaping if it's a pipe that's leaking, not so much if the suspension leg is leaking internally.

The thing to really watch out for is the pump running continuously, which indicates a fairly hefty leak; if it's left unfixed, the pump will eventually stop, possibly by popping the fuse or, if you're unlucky, by burning itself out.

Again, it's not necessarily game over, pumps and suspension units can be had as pattern parts (don't bother with used, too easy to get yourself into a same shizzle different day situation) but make sure they come from a reputable source, there are some crap parts out there.

Don't completely discount ringing a main dealer for parts for these cars, Merc are quite good at looking after their older cars and you could be pleasantly surprised at the prices, I've run old Mercs as dailies for years and I would say they are amongst the cheapest cars to run, considering how cheaply they can be bought.
