It's the sheer grit and determination of the man that is outstanding. And who knows what achievements in exploration his team might have achieved had their ship not been crushed in the ice? But when you take on such difficult and extreme challenges, luck will always play a part. It is that such men could accept risk that made them what they were. To risk nothing is to gain nothing.

Yes I saw this article yesterday - really interesting. The condition is incredible. Clearly near-zero salt water can be quite good for preserving timber, and the ship was no spring chicken when it went down either.

I really enjoyed (and sometimes rewatch) the Channel 4 production of "Shackleton", starring Kenneth Branagh. Two part series - worth a watch. Looks like it's available on 4OD at the moment (or whatever Channel 4's catch up service is called these days).

Another fun part, the James Caird which is situated in Dulwich College, I have seen it first hand! We support the College so I've had great pleasure in walking round there getting given the full Shackleton experience, such an interesting guy!

They had a microbiologist on the radio the other day who said that it's more that there is no wood in the Antarctic and so there are no cold-adapted microbes present which break wood down.

I understood that the ship was built in Norway for one shower of cunts who decided not to purchase it.
Shackers got in touch with the builders and offered a purse for it. He got an excellent ship for a knock-down price.

The specification on the ship was excessive. Only due to the build was it able to survive the crush of the ice. The ship was an un-heralded star of the show too.
