I'm seriously considering buying a bike which is a Cat D write off.
the damage is purley cosmetic mirrors, mudguard, brake lever & panels cracked.
I was wondering once I've repaired it how do I go about getting it back on the road or can it go straight back on.
Also will my insurance still want to know me if I tell them I want to insure an Ex-Cat D bike?

It can go back on the road just fine yes and I'm not sure insurance need to know.. but you must state it when you sell the bike etc.. it shouldn't make the bike hard to sell at all as Cat C/D are perfectly legal and have often just had plastics damaged! My SV is a Cat C, I got it for a cracking price and it's mint. Cool

I'm curious about this too. My solicitor (not my insurance company, but provided by them) sent an engineer to assess the damage on my bike and said it was an economical write off. What are the different categories ? He put it down as salvage category C.

There's no major damage, just big ticket items like new fuel tank and exhaust pushed repair costs over the value of the bike (~£900). There's a dent my knee made in the tank and to be honest, I think the exhaust was knackered before the crash.

I'm keeping it and waiting to see if I get the money, but do I need to tell anyone I'm not scrapping it if it's been classed as salvage category C? Of course then I'll be torn between fixing my bike up for resale or using the money for that Bandit I keep dreaming about.

hey all,
I hope this clears some quesions up.:

My bike was knocked over a few months back and it went through the insurance companies, My bike became a cat D write-off due to the cosmetic damage. Now I checked up on this and if it holds a valid MOT then theres no need to get another one until its due, and also its worth letting your insurance company know just incase but im pretty sure it doesnt make any differece to your premium...well it didnt for me. I phoned the DVLA on this one so the info is straight from the horses mouth so to speak, but if your still unsure give them a quick call. cant hurt.

cheers
Loz

Category A: Scrap only - this vehicle should have been crushed. It should never reappear on the road and there are no economically salvageable parts. It is of value only for scrap metal - e.g. a totally burnt-out vehicle.

Category B: The bodyshell should have been crushed. The vehicle should never reappear on the road, but it can be broken for spare parts plus any residual scrap metal.

Category C: Vehicle extensively damaged and insurer has decided no to repair.

Category D: Vehicle damaged and insurer has decided not to repair.

Category F: Vehicle damaged by fire and insurer has decided not to repair (often recorded as Category A).
