trail and dual sport, yes pretty much same thing - these are CRF250L, CRF300L, KLX250, KLX250L - typically, also Serow, TW225, TW125...not sporty at all, but best for trails out of those bikes with lights, indicators, etc.
anything enduro is going to be a competition bike, probably - some may be road registered but they won't have indicators - but there are cross-over bikes that do pretty well on road, off road, and even competitively - the best (and maybe even only) example is the CRM250 (a grey import)
Stuff like the DRZ400 are obviously in the trail and dual sport camp (sport should be in inverted commas, obvs) ____________________ "Life is a sexually transmitted disease and the mortality rate is one hundred percent."

The Trail term came first and were mainly smaller capacity bikes 125-250 ccand teh occasional 400cc as Trevor suggests, these were the DTs, TSs and KLs.
I usually imagine the newer 'Dual-Sport' genre to be higher capacity 600cc plus bikes, Tigers GSs Tenere etc..
Enduro as said lairy competition bike. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750

Motocross is an offroad race where first over the line after each race wins. Like in formula 1.
Enduro is an endurance race where the person who has completed most laps after a certain time is the winner. Like in Le Mans.
Trail/Dual Sport/Adventure rides aren't races.
Scrambles are an older fashioned type of motocross.
There wouldn't be much point in road registering a competition motocross or enduro bike. There are many motocross/enduro style bikes which are supplied as road legal, most of them bear as much resemblance to a competition machine as a road legal sports bike does to a superbike racer.
Many older scramblers would be road registered because it wasn't unusual to ride the bike to and from the race.
Then there are trials bikes, which are probably the most extreme offroad orientated bike, designed to negotiate obstacles and stupidly steep/loose or twisty terain. Usually very slow, very low geared, very light and without a saddle or lights. Perversely many of these ARE road registered, even though it's barely possible to ride many of them on the road, because they are often ridden between sections on public roads.
Worth mentioning that because pretty much any offroad bike can be road registered. If it's a solo bike which is designed for off road use, the MOT rules are pretty slack. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. They're all sexy whatever they're called
(except the Nobster option )
I love a trailie style bike no matter what they are. Even if I only ride them on the road. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |
