Congestion charge fine - 3 minutes!

Took the car into work a couple of weekends ago.

Congestion charge stops at 6pm on weekends, apparently I was 3 whole minutes early into the zone. I am sure my phone said it was 6pm but apparently I entered at 17:57.

I thought there was some leeway on the times for this sort of thing but I can't find anything on the internets, perhaps my Google-Fu is weak.

Any advice, or do I just need to stump up the £80?

Appeal, they often let people off the first time. You got nowt to lose. I got my bike made exempt but it didn't go on their system properly. My first incursion was a warning.

I would act fast as presumably the fine is discounted if paid promptly? Unfortunately it's probably a case of the line has to be drawn somewhere and that's where it's been drawn. I am wary of bus lane cameras around here; the bus lanes become active at 7am and deactivate at 7pm, I tend to always ensure I'm out of them by 6:55 and don't go into them before 7:05 just in case their clock is out by a few minutes (it'd be fun trying to argue that one!).

I contested it anyway, nothing to lose as the fine gets frozen at the point in time it is contested (i.e. they'll keep it at the low rate, it won't go up).

I don't expect to win, but nothing to lose by trying.
