You're right, I can't find it either, except here (which looks like the Kosovan version of the site?) - https://www.yamaha-motor.eu/kv/kv/products/motorcycles/urban-mobility/ys125/

Really though, it could just be a mistake on the site. Best way is probably just to ring Yamaha UK/a big Yamaha dealer and ask them.

Fowlers here in Bristol have just a 2017 model on their catalogue
which may be useful as parts source

I emailed Yamaha UK instead (I don’t live in the UK any more). They replied saying, “Unfortunately, this motorcycle has become unavailable”. So, yeah, the YS125 is discontinued.

However, they said the reason for it being discontinued “is not information we are able to give out”. (I had asked in my email if it was to do with Euro5 emissions regulations. I suspect it probably is. But Honda developed the CB125F to meet the new regs, cutting weight and improving combustion efficiency, which also improves performance and saves fuel.)

So I guess Yamaha is giving up the market entirely to the CB125F and Chinese competition? Not a great sign of their ambition. Hopefully they’re not the next Suzuki.

Its a 125, they are using the UKs child grabbing efforts and just pushing pricey bikes.

The incentive is to jog on 125s as fast as you can as a child.

125 market in the UK is for children really. The UK market is going to target them specifically, they like cool looking plastic toys like the YZF and MT, a YS is barely going to tickle the pickle of any youngster so would seem they are pointing towards a more money grabbing selling attitude.

I see. Maybe you’re right. But the YBR125 was a popular commuter / courier / delivery bike in cities. The YS125 never became as popular, but then it wasn’t sold for as long.

I like 125 cc bikes and think they’re the essence of motorcycling, but I know hardly anyone with a full licence agrees with me … still, I thought loads of grown ups still bought them for functional transport.

My car is functional transport. A 125 won't do any of the things my car does and the ones it does do similar to my bike it does it much worse.

They are NOT the essence of biking...

I think I’m a real man. At any rate, the imaginary part of me is not very pronounced, and some people miss it entirely.

But perhaps modern British men are too manly for 125s. It’s one explanation for why the YS125 disappeared.

Indeed the YBR was ideal but times are changing and I have no doubt the same of YBRs/similar style went down when things like the modern MT series came out.

I have had a 125 on a full licence, it served a purpose which was super cheap London commuting. Fuck having a 125 now though.

I have got a 125. And a full license.
It's going though. I'd rather eat the fuel cost.

Now, an RS125 or Mito would be a different story. A fun litlte thing to spank around lanes. The polar opposite of a YBR/YS125.

I wouldn’t want it to be my only bike though.

But then you’d kill the appeal. The charm of a Honda CG125 or YBR125 is that it’s a ‘minimum viable product’. It’s not stuffed full of optional fripperies, unnecessary bulk, unnecessary power, unnecessary expense, etc. Functionalism at its finest.

The compactness and simplicity are what make it fun.

I'd rather ride a superdream, which was the epitome of mediocrity.

I’ve owned a CG 125 and a Superdream.
Neither would have set the World on fire, but they both just kept going with the minimum of maintenance and cost pennies to run.
Surely that’s a good reason to own one?

That little CG125 , despite all it’s failings, always made me smile when I went out on it.
It’s context regarding why you’re riding it?

Opinions vary. I think it’s sublime.

The CG125 is a high point of functional design for me, before fashion-driven fads took over motorcycles too. One cylinder, two valves driven by short pushrods from a single cam lobe, hemispherical combustion chamber, gravity-fed carburettor. Tough transmission. Bare minimum of body panels. Pre-tensioned wire-spoked wheels. Inner tubes. Chromed parts with little ornamentation (look at that beautiful straight exhaust).

It’s a sweet thing to ride too unless you want to tear around like a teenager or cruise down a motorway. Lovely sound.

The YBR125 was interesting because it approximated a CG125 for a while after the latter became unavailable. The YS125 and CB125F have fallen a long way from the CG125 in looks and simplicity but still have some of that light, cheap, practical charm.

But of all of these, apparently only the CB125F remains.

I'm into low maintenance - but many Japanese bikes of the last 20 years or more fulfil that criterion. As for costing pennies to run, if you're talking about mpg, very few people are bothered about that so no, I don't think that's a good reason. For those in the third world needing affordable transport, perhaps. But you're not going to get many other people giving too much of a thought for mpg when it comes to bikes.

Different times and all that.
I had a variety of 125’s in days gone by, when I was younger and not earning a big wage.
Little moneys and a need for independent transport = the fabulous Honda cg125. Very Happy

There’s low maintenance and low maintenance, though. With a CG125 it’s feasible to do most jobs yourself – even big ones like an engine rebuild. Parts are few and cheap. It’s reasonable to buy the required tools for this, too.

Plenty of Japanese bikes need computer fault diagnosis, expensive single-purpose tools, a way to measure torque angle, etc. Realistically these bikes depend on dealer service.

Obviously most people couldn’t care less about any of this, but some still like to do their own work for the satisfaction of it or to save money.

For me, for instance, true freedom is low running costs. I don’t have a regular-hours job and want to keep it that way.

Clearly that’s true, since plenty of bikes absurdly burn more fuel than my car. But with petrol at €2 a litre and terrible air quality everywhere urban, I’m not sure why. I think unless your bike is a pure toy you should care about how much dictators’ oil it burns.
