|
|
Hi all
I want to buy a road legal 125/250 off road bike, like a wr 125r or crf 250L but i'm not sure i'll be able to fit it past my garden gate. I've took measurements, its about 28 inches at its narrowest.

*mods please move this if not in the right sub-forum
Edit: ok, what do 125/250 off road owners think about it fitting through the gate? |

I'd be prepared to have get new bars/cut them down. A quick google seems to indicate the bars on a CRF250L are 32" (I saw 802mm quoted too).
People do run them narrower than standard for trail riding sometimes, so it's possible to do. Renthal's sizing for 7/8" bars (as used on the CRF as standard) doesn't go much smaller than the normal width though. https://www.renthal.com/moto/handlebars/7-8-handlebars/mx-enduro-7-8-quot ____________________ Current - '94 VFR750FR, '00 VFR800FI Previous - '10 Street Triple R, '92 MZ ETZ301, '05 TTR250, NSR125R, KMX125, "Honda" Win (chinese copy of an old Honda design with a C90 engine)

If the bars are 4 inches too wide, you might get it through the gate, but look at the pics. It's only an inch or two wider all the way down, and one side is glass. A smashed window is only a matter of time with standard bars. |
Probably I was thinking along the lines of what I'd do with a push-bike - pick up the front end and wheelie it through - otherwise you have to factor the width of the bike and yourself.
Still, the dolly idea is good as if you have the dirt bike sat in the back garden and you stash the dolly indoors then it makes it that much harder for the scrotes to steal it. And trust me: there's been cases round my way where they've just waltzed through the back gate and wheeled the bike out in broad daylight ____________________ Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

Well, despite not knowing if it will fit i've put a deposit down on a klx 250, will be delivered within 14 days. It has acerbis handguards that add an inch either side! If it doesn't fit i'll be sleeping on the driveway chained up to it ...
seriously if it doesn't fit i'll be partly removing the handlebars to get it through to my garage, then pricing up a new wider gate. I've ordered a dolly in the hope it'll go through with the handlebars on full lock on the dolly. |

Maybe. Before hacksawing I'd try it without the handguards 1st, they can't be too difficult to remove.
I've been using an online triangle calculator, you punch in a length and an angle and it gives you the width of the handlebars on full lock - full lock i'm guessing is 45 degrees (anyone have a better guess?). I inputted the handlebar length as 33.5 (32 is stock). The width it calculates is 24in, my gate is 28in, so in theory it should fit on a dolly on full lock.
Here's the bike, look at the added width due to the handguards.
