Help, how to cook pinto beans for Frijoli refritas

Success!!! I can proudly report successful bean refritasing! I soaked 50g of pinto beans overnight with a level teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda. They fell apart like a Russian tank formation after fifteen minutes of simmering with the lid on the pan at a low heat. I then drained them and sweated down and fried off a small onion to which I added the beans a small amount of water. A few minutes of simmering and stirring and the broke down and were ready to be seasoned with salt pepper and paprika. Luverly Laughing

Im going to hold off on getting a pressure cooker now unless the one I have my eye on in Sainsbury's goes on sale.

Im going to see if I can give some dry chickpeas the same treatment.

I wonder if your lentlis had been pretreated with bicarb?

Ive recently started making a leak, lentil and carrot soup which the carrot helps thicken. I find fifteen minutes of simmering and the lentils are done. I dont wash the lentils either they seem just fine.

I think a lot depends on the lentils. Some of the ones you get from Asian supermarkets (in huge bags for next to nothing), you have to pick over to remove any stones and bits of not-lentil and you definitely want to wash them off first! They do make a good curry though.

I get the ktc brand in the ethnic section of the supermarket. They seem ok but if i was buying the huge bags down the Asian supermarket i would probably five them a rinse at least. The ktc ones seem just the same as supermarket own brands.

Just done a dried to cooked chickpeas test.
100g of ktc dried chickpeas from Sainsbury's soaked overnight with half level teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda. Rinsed then cooked for fifteen minutes in a covered pan at the lowest setting on a small electric ring drawing 150w. Unfortunately not much more economic than buying the tinned variety just to make simple cooked chickpeas. The 100g dry did produce 240g of finished product though, which is the drained weight of the canned variety. However, if the overnight soaked chickpeas had gone straight into being curried then at my current electric rate then I reckon a small saving is made.
100g dry peas are 22p and make 240g or a tins worth which cost currently 35p at Sainsbury's and also my local Aldi.
The hunt is on now for cheaper dried chickpeas.

You would save 10p over a can of chickpeas at best?

FFS, just turn the thermostat down a degree and save fuck loads more.

Im thinking more a tropical beach based "reality" show something like Bikini Chickpea Beach Chase.


The chickpeaonomics are a bit poor but the pinto beans for refried beans are a good deal. Its £1:50 for a tin of old el paso refried beans but with the bicarb trick i can make them for half that.
