I just got an email from Halfords telling me my “Kawasaki ZX” is due an MOT soon, and they can do it for £39.99

I don’t know how they know. Also they must think it’s a car at that price. I won’t be taking it to Halfords.

I recall the MOT tester has to allow a certain amount of time from the start of the appointment (according to the government computer system) to issuing of the certificate. Does anyone know the specified time period for a bike MOT? It’s over-generous for a bike as I recall so we end up chatting.

The Kawasaki is pending some maintenance anyway but I’ll have the Yamaha R1 MOT’d hopefully this week and I’m just wondering whether I can get there and back in an hour and avoid having to book time off work.

I know that the bike test specified time is the same as a car test as my usual tester told me as much earlier this month. Probably 45 mins.

I think it's 20 minutes from the start of the online test until the results can be issued. It may be 30. I'm usually chatting to the bloke who does mine to pass the time

Chances are you've bought something from there before (online maybe) and they've linked your plate to your email address.

Online tracking is VERY efficient these days (which is why you'll see adverts for your google searches following you around different sites if you don't use an ad/tracking blocker)

Ah! I do give them my email address to get electronic receipts, and I might have told them I own the Kawasaki in a subsequent questionnaire (I coulda won £250 ). However I wouldn’t have given them the registration number, and I’ve never bought a plate there. (I think they stopped doing that anyway.)

You must have entered your reg plate in the 'what oil/bulbs etc' is suitable for my vehicle. It'll all be in the T&Cs on their website.

At one point (don't know if it's the case now) it seemed like the only way to browse their products on their website was to first enter vehicle registration.. Which is stupid in itself as it restricts listings when you perhaps want to just browse all products but there we go.

There's a loophole to charging more. The maximum cost for just the test is £29.65 at the time of posting this. But they can charge extra for transporting the bike to their test centre or a 3rd party one. Simply this involves taking it from the parking lot to the garage. Take the bike yourself to an MOT centre.

I think Halfords are offering me a ‘favourable’ price for an MOT on what their bot thinks is a car, and they don’t even do bike MOTs. It’s going to a proper bike shop on Saturday.
