Hi all... my buying a bike saga is at an end nearly and need advice on how to ride in my new bike which I pick up in the morning. Its a CBR600RR by the way and is brand new so I need to rack up mileage and quick before I can rag it... any tips on the best fuel, warm up process and riding process? all advice will be very helpful as am new to this 'running the engine in' stuff. I understand I shouldn't go higher than 7000rpm, thats about it Embarassed

Thought you were getting a 6R??

Anyhoo there are many trains of thought regarding running in, my only advise would be:

Don't leave idling for ages to warm up, just ride gently from cold

Being new remember the tyres are also new and will be slippy for the first 100 miles or so or till they are scrubbed in so take it easy round the bends.

New modern engines should not be warmed up, just start it and ride.

Relax and enjoy. Thumbs Up

On older engines when new the cylinder bore would be machined to a high standard but technology limited how well machined the bore could be. hence the running in process effectively using the piston to bed into the cylinder bore. Running too fast or more accurately too hot would cause this process to fail and early failure of the engine.

On modern engines the technology now exists to completley polish the cylinder bores and make pistons an exact matching size doing away with the bedding in process and the initial 1000 mile oil change older engines required.

It is worth noting however that 2 strokes still require bedding in due to other factors rather than machining tolerances.

A good example of running in 2 stroke engines can be found in modellers nitro engines where the bore is slightly tapered and the piston has no rings.

In short just start and ride, but allow engine oil to get hot before thrashing

Thought the only stipulation Honda make is no full power starts. That's what it was for my Blade, the dealer told me that on pick up and it's in the manual.

Good luck

Everyone has their own method:

I've never owned a new bike, but owned new cars and never taken it easy with them. Not had any problems to date.

Never run a bike in in my life...but If I did get the chance I would follow the manufacturer's directions to the tee. You want this thing to do what they say it will, so do what they say you must.
