Evening all,

Since I am such a lovely person, I am going to replace the spark plug and HT lead on my Yamaha SR125 before I sell it - it's one of the few mechincal things I can do. Laughing

Only problem is, how do you know what plug and HT lead to get? I know when I have got them for cars, you just go to Halfords and loook them up in the little book thing. Is there something similair online for bikes? I have the Haynes manual, but the one it recommends is for an older model of the SR.

Cheers for any help!

Most motorbike plug caps are not model specific, just use what fits.

Take the old plug cap into the motorbike shop with you.

If it is a decent shop they will sell you an NGK plug cap which is the same length as your old one and a length of loose HT lead off a big coil of the stuff. The HT lead usually just screws directly into the coil and plug cap by means of a threaded spike up the middle.

Try to get copper cored HT lead if you can, the graphite cored stuff is crap with screw-in plug caps.

I've just gone and had it off (oo-er), as Mr Dodsi says, it is almost brand spanking new. Just a little bit of greyness on the end.

Just out of curiousity, how does one clean the end of a spark plug? Will a bit of WD40 do the job, or is it wire brush and scrubbing time? They are so cheap that when I was driving, I would just chuck them and throw in new ones in every 6 months.

Then finds that either:

a) They don't have it.
b) The book is wrong.
c) The sales staff deny the existance of any such thing despite it being listed in the book and available to order off the website.
d) (in the case of sparkplugs) There is only ever one on the shelf when you have a two cylinder bike.
e) They sell the sparkplugs but not the spanner to fit them.

answers:
a) our new stock system is pants so we never have anything in stock. And if we do, it has probably just been delivered amongst 200 other crates because the system suddenly decided we needed our entire years stock in one delivery.
b) the customer looked up the wrong car (I can give thousands of examples) or the book is completely out of date, or the staff are untrained/lazy/scared of you.
c) put that down to untrained and/or lazy staff that i have to butt-kick daily to do anything (they are usually students that only work part-time)
d) see a)
e) yup Smile they need more motorbike stuff! and none of the staff know anything about the bike stuff anyway.

I love my job
