I have just bought a 1999 GSXR600 and was wondering if its normal having to leave the thing running for a while to warm it up before i can ride it in the morning ?

Also can you tell from the temp. gauge when it is ready to go ?

Please tell me the procedure you use when getting your bike out for a run.

I also have to rev it a little while pressing the ignition button to get it going in the morning is this normal ?

Some bikes need a whiff of throttle when you're cranking them over, others don't. It can even vary between two bikes the same, so find out which way works best for yours and stick with it.

Warming up is very important. If you thrash an engine from cold you'll introduce serious wear, not least in the piston rings which will wear thin allowing the compression to pressurise the cranckcases and that'll fill your air-box with oil.

I wheel mine out, give it a little choke and fire it up. After a few seconds I slowly back the choke off until it's ticking over evenly at about 1500 - 2000 revs. Close and lock the garage door, then choke off some more - 1200 ish revs. Lid on, fasten jacket, gloves on and then ride away. Within half a mile I can push the choke fully home and it's running a treat (the temp gauge still isn't registering). Leaving it revving it's nuts off on the stand for 5 minutes is not good, for the bike or the neighbours Wink

I'm three miles from the end of the 30 limit and that distance is enough to get the engine running sweetly and the temp gauge creeping up, then it's out into the sticks and give it the beans

Thumbs Up

Also after riding a few miles and the bike has finally warmed up turn the bike's idle screw, located next to the carbs, clockwise to increase the idlle speed of the engine to the recommended idling speed as noted your manual once you've got it downloaded that is. Doing this will mean the bike start up more easily next time without having to put to much choke on and therefore it will not cut out when you have to stop at say the traffic lights!
