Hi all I’m looking to return to biking after 20 years off a bike, I’m looking for recommendations for a comfortable bike I’m not a knee down kind of rider just a general ride out with wife on back but do like something with grunt in a straight line, I had a VFR 750 20 years ago I have looked at the blackbird only because I always wanted one but couldn’t afford one, your opinions would be appreciated, looking to spend about £4000.

Yamaha Tracer 700 or 900 would suit your purpose and you could get a decent one for £4000, or if you fancy something a bit different try a Royal Enfield.
I can recommend the Himalayan or you might look at the Scram 411

Honda CBF1000 ~2010 on.
Suzuki GSX1250S ~2013 on.
Fazer 800 / 1000.
Might just squeeze a private sale Tiger 1050.

dont think youll find much straight line grunt in one of them.

Well you can get a very nice Blackbird for £2.5k if you look around. But make sure you have a sit on one. There's a lot more weight on your wrists than a VFR.

But "comfy, grunty, not bothered about getting your knee down" says tourer to me.

FJR1300? ST1300 Pan Euro? Triumph Sprint GT? They're the first ones that spring to mind, all available in your price range.

20 years is a long while. I've been off riding for a couple of months and my GSX-S made my eyes pop out on stalks when I first rode it again.

I reckon something like a Tracer 700, or a Versys 650 or something like that would really work for you. Nowadays sportsbikes and to some extent sports tourers are out and everything is 'adventure' this and 'dual sport' that. The only dual sport they'll see is when a pub shows both the football and the snooker and the TV can be seen from the car park.

I'm not big on 'adventure' style bikes but they sound like they could well work for you.
