Evening all, recently completed my CBT and also bought the bike I took it on. Yamaha YBR 125 Custom 2013 reg.
I got the bike mainly for commuting a few miles each day, however, I really enjoy being on it. Went a 10 mile run yesterday just to get some more time in the saddle.
However, (bet you all seen that coming) I have some slight niggles with the bike. In no particular order.
Windscreen, all the screens I have seen are for the 2017 model onwards or they are the big screens, I don't like them aesthetically though.
Fairings, I think the original colour was grey due to the fuel tank and rear plastics being that colour. The side plastics are black so would like to get grey fairings to match, while not a massive deal, I think it would be nice to get it back to original colour.
Brake and clutch levers, they both feel loose and wobble so would like to change them. I've seen a few I like but budget is a bit of constraint at the minute, do any of you have any in mind that are wallet friendly?
Gear lever, same as brake/clutch, feels loose so would like to change.
The exhaust has some rust but will be giving a quick sand and treat it to some high heat spray paint.
All of the above I feel comfortable doing the work myself, the following I'll need to take to a repair shop I'd imagine.
Rear drum is squeaking under braking, imagine it may need either greased or replaced and I'm certain I'd be better getting a specialist due to the safety of the bike and myself.
Chain adjustment, just need to see it being done once and I should be good to go on that side.
Thats about it. Thanks for reading. ____________________ Yamaha YBR 125 Custom 2013 |

Windscreen - What do you want from it exactly? Is it just the look, or do you want it to actually do something to protect you from the wind? There are lots of "universal fit" screens available, but they're generally a hassle to fit. There are also dedicated screens for the YBR from various places, like this one. https://www.mandp.co.uk/products/yamaha-ybr125-honda-cg125-puig-fly-screen-dark-tint-585252
Levers - If the levers are loose and wobbly, it is unlikely to be the levers themselves (which are generally a single piece of metal). The most likely fix is just to tighten the nuts that hold them in place. It's quite possible that the training school may have loosened them all slightly to reduce the risk of breaking them when learners (inevitably) drop the bikes. ____________________ Current - '94 VFR750FR, '00 VFR800FI Previous - '10 Street Triple R, '92 MZ ETZ301, '05 TTR250, NSR125R, KMX125, "Honda" Win (chinese copy of an old Honda design with a C90 engine)

More to get a bit of protection from the wind. The one in the link looks like it will do the job nicely. Maybe not finding anything as I was always putting in 'YBR 125'.

I'll have a look tomorrow when I'm home from work.

If they haven't corroded away remove them, wire brush them, copperslip them and refit
If they look a bit iffy they're only £1.33 each new from Fowlers or
just get 2 xM8 SS cap heads and copperslip them in too
If they seize or rust in you'll have hours of fun getting the zorst off
Funny you say that, I was thinking about replacing the nuts/bolts and screws over time, as you can imagine it's pretty much spent its entire life outside and more than a few are rusty. I'll just order the new bolts as it'll be easier.
Check/sort them now and any exhaust removal in the future should be a quick easy job.
the YBR is an easy bike to work on, why pay £40+ per hour
for a shop to do work you can easily do yourself?
Haynes manual will be getting purchased tomorrow, is there much between my model (custom) and a normal YBR
While I'm rantin on...
All levers wear with use esp on an ex skool bike
But usually it isn't just the lever alone wearing out,
its the lever and the switch assembly its bolted to all wearing at the same time.
If you want snug, new feel levers you'll probably have to shell out for new bar assemblies too and on the RH bar this means the master cylinder.
I would like that to a degree, I plan on keeping the bike for at least 18 months so to me at least, it makes sense to do these small things now. I've left the engine bars (think that's what they're called) on for the time being, possibly just leave on for the time I have the bike.
My advice:
Learn and do the basic servicing then get on and clock up some miles on it |
