Looking for somewhere interesting to visit locally I was thinking about going to the RSPB reserve at Fowlmere, Cambridgeshire; somewhere I’ve been before. Then I noticed on Google Maps that the Fowlmere Airfield Museum was close by and open today. It’s a single Nissen Hut on slightly more than a farm strip insofar as there were several light aircraft across the way and in a hangar, but it’s still a grass runway. Not much activity. The site was a WW1 airstrip, then farmland, then a satellite station for nearby Duxford (and Bolton Paul Defiants) before the Americans moved in with Mustangs.
Most interestingly, post war it became a camp for Polish soldiers returning from Italy, and their families, not having anything to go back to at that time. Apparently there were 40 Polish camps across the UK (not to mention the Czechs, etc which I assume were also accommodated elsewhere). When I say ‘camp’ they had a school (before attending a local primary school) and a place of worship, it was basically a Polish village, albeit meagre like much of England at that time. I was even guided by a nice chap who was brought up in said camp. Nice local history and tales of heroism, local artefacts, original cine film. Highly recommended.
Apparently there is also a museum at nearby Nuthampstead which stationed the USAF B17 Flying Fortress and the P38 Lighting, which I’ll be seeking out next.
No photos, but I was slightly entertained by the story of the relatively elderly but left-field fellow (forgotten his name ) who engineered his way onto the site post-WW2 to address any issues and was successful, but incidentally commandeered a bright green motorcycle from the local motor pool (having been offered a jeep). I like to think the visit of my lime green Kawasaki would please him. |

Visited the Triumph Factory and the National Motorcycle Museum a couple of weeks ago. Both worth a visit, though we couldn't do the proper factory tour at Triumph as they're refitting.
Forgot to take any pictures at Triumph, but there's some pics of some of the weird bikes at the NMM here - https://imgur.com/a/SbWR1FE ____________________ Current - '94 VFR750FR (Dead), '00 VFR800FI, 2011 CBF125 Previous - '10 Street Triple R, '92 MZ ETZ301, '05 TTR250, NSR125R, KMX125, "Honda" Win (chinese copy of an old Honda design with a C90 engine)

Took the 800 Viffer for a bimble, it was feeling unloved as I've been on the Fireblade for commuting duties in this weather. Went over Eclusham Mountain, through the ford at Worlds End and then back via the Horseshoe pass to open her up a bit.

On Saturday I did an Airfield Riding day at the local RAF station. I've been with the club for a while now, and so they've decided I belong in the fast group... It was a bit scary but it seems my pace does justify it, which is nice. Their overall pace is not the same as a No Limits or something, but it's reasonable.
I had a crash at Cadwell Park in may and sprained my left foot among other injuries. I can't walk properly still and I am still not quite 100% on driving a car (because of the clutch). I can, it seems, still ride though, and managed to make a decent account of myself on the airfield day despite my trackbike being a little mashed - I used my newly serviced Street Triple instead and it was a lot of fun. I miss the quickshifter off of the track bike, and I'd definitely prefer clip ons and a touch more front end feel, but considering the circumstances it was a lot of fun.

To the BMW Dealership for a service of Frau.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52229729875_8017c630bb_c.jpg
Made the most of the journey up there and back. It's only 30 miles each way but there are some nice lanes if you stay off the A roads.
£190 including VAT. Not bad really. Well, I thought it wasn't, until I realised that they've charged £56 plus VAT for 4 litres of BMW's special magic 15w40 oil, that burns off in the boxer in no time at all
Still, I'm old and rollin' in cash so it's worth it to keep the value of the bike up. Nobody buys a bike like this unless it's got the stamps. True story. |

Short trip to the reed beds and board walks of RSPB Fowlmere south-west of Cambridge, partly inspired by this blog. Lovely hot day, white clouds and blue skies. Unexpectedly I had several brief, friendly conversations with knowledgeable visitors, one of whom put me onto an app called BirdNET which sits nicely alongside PlantNet for putting names to what you see and hear. Dragonflies, butterflies, marsh harrier and little egret, peewit, heron… lovely. ”Stabiliser” cattle too, standing ankle deep in the water.
On arrival there was an F15 jet tearing up the sky not far away, and later from the Reed Bed Hide I could hear and then see two P51 Mustangs aerobatting, and nearby Duxford’s B17 bomber ‘Sally-B’ rumbling along in the distance. It was ‘American Flying Day’ at the airfield’s working museum which I hadn’t been aware of despite being a member. That was my next destination, and since it was sold out I watched from local lanes for half an hour or so. The day was mostly about enjoying the bike though. 67k miles and it’s as good as ever; a swooping, screaming, roaring joy, like owning a pet dragon.
Poor photographs from Fowlmere because my compact camera was through maximum optical zoom and into digital zoom. I didn’t take many anyway. I’ll post one of a heron, plus the Kawasaki in the lanes.

A good day. I wish it could always be summer.

Today I went to my mom in the other town and I had to ride for 2 hours to reach her. It was rainy and I was afraid to ride in the rain but luckily I am a caring rider) Mom made me the best coffee with the creamer I have ever tasted, it is delicious. When I'll done my job I would visit her more often. Try to make some photos in the next trip, the road is amazing |

To the MotoGP at Silverstone. It was ok but I think I enjoyed the ride there and back more. Still I’m looking forward to watching it on ITV tomorrow evening so I’ll know what was going on. Amazing speeds and noise, mind.
I was surprised how much of the grounds were covered with loose grey rubble like something off a slag heap. Uncomfortable to walk on and to ride a bike across to park.
It was so hot I didn’t want to walk far so I loitered around the Wellington Straight, Brooklands, Luffield and Woodcote, which was also where the trade stands and BMX jumps were.
Being tight I only stumped up the £80 (+VAT) for ‘general admission’ and £10 for a programme. Without a grandstand ticket you’re limited in what you can see and the best views are obscured by the same grandstands or the fencing. I felt a bit short-changed to be frank. Nice to say I’ve been though.
Edit: best of a crap short series of photos, because ‘to v or not to v’ pointed out this is a picture thread.

Yeah, even if I was in the money and following it all closely, I wouldn't pay that.
Last race I attended was at Donington many years ago, that seemed to offer some good viewpoints, but I was mug enough to pay to cross the bridge to the infield, where there was nothing going on, and no decent views. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
