Because, just like the Tory party, Korn has decided to use the exit from the EU to reduce the number of functions he provides.

Let's look at the original article that The Independent are talking about:

"Cutting taxes must go hand in hand with trimming the bureaucratic bloat of Whitehall to bring down inflation

History will remember George Osborne's period as chancellor favourably. He had a long-term economic plan and recognised that taxpayer's money must be used carefully. This was not primarily about cutting spending but about using money to its best advantage. It is thanks to his efforts that the nation could afford the £400 billion of support offered during the pandemic.

For the British state to weather the coming storm of inflation and to support the public adequately, waste and inefficiency must be reduced. Working with officials and fellow ministers in the Cabinet Office this year, I have been able to realise billions of pounds of savings for the taxpayer. By removing unnecessary inefficiencies and waste this will help to address inflation, which has reached extraordinary heights.

When I was appointed minister for Brexit opportunities and government efficiency, I said that the two adjacent responsibilities were one and the same. Our departure from the European Union necessitates a re-thinking of the British state. This means going beyond ministers looking for fiscal trims and haircuts and considering whether the state should deliver certain functions at all.

These savings will ensure the taxpayer can afford to help the public with a spike in energy costs this year and will consequently help to cut inflation. As a supporter of Liz Truss to become prime minister I am a strong advocate of the benefit of tax cuts to the economy and to the British consumer. The economy must grow both to pay for public services and reduce the tax burden.

All taxes are eventually paid by individuals as every day prices, whether they are green levies on energy bills, corporation tax, or national insurance, which affect economic growth and overall inflation. While I support cutting taxes to unleash economic growth, we must eradicate waste so public money is spent as effectively as possible. We will not bring inflation down without a lean and efficient state.

The trade border is one example of how government efficiency eases inflation. In the spring, thanks to the support of the Prime Minister and Liz Truss, the government suspended the expensive physical checks on incoming goods from the European Union to address the rising cost of food. As well as saving officials at the border time and resources, this measure has also saved businesses in the wider economy at least £1 billion in avoided costs, preventing shortages of goods and delays in already strained supply chains.

Thanks to the freedoms outside the EU we are going further by cutting tariffs and digitising our trade border with the Single Trade Window next year, which will help businesses trade across our border seamlessly, cutting costs and reducing inflation. The data flowing through our borders will help ministers make new efficiencies and potentially save the taxpayer billions of pounds by avoiding building costly infrastructure or automating existing processes. In turn, we will be able to reduce the tax burden on the British people without increasing inflation as the economy grows and the state operates more efficiently.

Maintaining government efficiency requires constant vigilance to stop departments from wasting taxpayers’ money, which in turn increases government debt and risks higher inflation. With a tight control on spending and an emphasis on reducing fraud, the Cabinet Office was able to save over £3.5 billion for the taxpayer in 2020 to 2021. This must go much further. Earlier this year, the Efficiency and Value for Money Cabinet Committee was established with a mission to save the taxpayer over £5.5 billion each year. This was sadly under-utilised by the former chancellor, but it must be a vital tool in the next prime minister’s arsenal for cutting waste and inflation.

Surprisingly, there was a great deal of kicking and screaming from certain quarters in the Treasury in opposition to the Public Sector Fraud Authority, which was finally established with strong powers to claw back taxpayers’ money lost to fraud. I doubt this would have happened without Lord Agnew's dramatic resignation which shamed the Treasury into action. The Government will publish comprehensive information about the scale of fraud in the pandemic Bounce Back Loans Scheme in September and implement a programme to reclaim the billions lost to fraud, which should do much to restore taxpayers’ trust in the government’s management of their money.

Governments always face the pressures of public business, but this is not an argument for more civil servants. Completing the reduction to 2016 levels, by some 91,000 officials, 2025 will save the taxpayer over £3 billion and restore our bureaucracy to a sensible size now the pandemic has passed. The Cabinet Office is leading by example with a 25 per cent reduction in headcount over the next three years, which will be an opportunity for significant reform as well as savings.

This goes with the optimisation of the government estate which is saving the taxpayer around £6.5 billion through a combination of consolidating government property, more commercial nous in handling leases and running the buildings more efficiently. As figures show more civil servants returning to the office full time, taxpayers will want to see their money being spent on a Civil Service hard at work in the office.

The next prime minister will face great challenges from the first day in Downing Street. Cutting inflation, cutting taxes and growing the economy must be his or her overriding priorities. None of these are deliverable without political determination to make Whitehall as lean and efficient as it can be. The savings I have described should be a mission for all ministers in the new government, from the chancellor of the exchequer to the most recently-appointed under-secretary. Cutting taxes must go hand in hand with trimming the bureaucratic bloat of Whitehall, only that way will we bring inflation down and restore the economy to growth."

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/08/17/jacob-rees-moggs-whitehall-efficiency-drive-has-saved-almost/

Should they not do what he's talking about with making the state as efficient as possible?

Facebook keept putting conspiracy theory nonsense in front of me. You know, ancient Egyptians were really aliens and all that rubbish. Algorithm doesn't seem to be taking the hint when I kill them, just comes up with more of the same.

I'm sure it's because I posted on a vegan group calling out some of their B/S.

Why are people complaining about high gas bills at this time of year anyway? Heating is off (or it should be) and cookers use fuck-all gas. My cooker is on bottled gas so I'm very aware how much I use because I have to hump a gas bottle into the van then up the garden, I cook a lot and I use a 24kg bottle about every 2 years.

Is it the direct debit nonsense, charging you for way more than you're using?

I purposely opted for a quarterly contract where I get the bill by post and I pay only when I want to pay it. And not for money to be taken from me, when it is inconvenient.

I'm sure that is what it must be, because I've barely noticed an increase in my energy costs.

I'm still reluctant to agree to direct debits, badly burnt fingers back in the late 1980s! Would rather pay it in person when *I* am ready to give it to them - not when they think it's okay to just take it out of my bank. Thanks, but that's *my* money and I'll decide when to give it to you.

Energy-wise, I've not spent much more than usual even in this heat: my small clip-on fan's been on the go day and night all summer.

I'm on a smart meter, long consideredto be a rip-off Laughing ) and it works ok for me. I'm not really topping it up *that much* more than usual. I top up a bit extra if I go away just in case it runs out, but only add the odd tenner here and there.

In the winter of course I'm expecting it to be more expensive (based on what everyone is bleating about), but then, it always is - I top it up a bit higher in the winter anyway.

I might moan louder in the winter - The Senior Consort* is already suggesting he will be keeping his winter house temperature down. Last year when we were still a new thing, he made the effort to turn up the heating, if not to my usual subtropical requirements, then at least a bit more. This year, he's already said he's tightening his belt Laughing I'll just have to buy some cashmere cardies, yay.

*single men over 55, as a genre, are incredibly mean with winter warmth. Nineteen degrees? Fuck that, I need 23 at a minimum indoors in the winter. I totally get that they don't like it being stuffy, indeed I am the same: I much prefer to have a window open for fresh air, even in winter, but I *do* need to be warm. If I get cold sitting on the sofa I will go to bed to stay warm and sulk, and if I have do that - I go to sleep, total shenanigan-free zone.

... its getting close to spider season! Mad Shocked Laughing

I do try to get along with spiders as long as they aren't *actually* on me. There's a rake of them out in the garden especially now I've made it a nicer place to be, and I do like to watch them - I am a bit wary if I accidentally encounter one too close, but I will shriek and fling myself about like a spastic if they are actually on me.

Although ...I notice that (someone has made their web inside my Death Star Shocked Shocked ... cheeky 8-eyed bastards!)

There was a mahoosive one in the bath on Saturday - the Senior Consort washed it down the plughole and tutted at my silly-girlie noises, but eventually I plucked up the courage to step into the bath for a shower.

But ever since I've been lifting pillows, inspecting the bottom of half-drunk cups of coffee, and shaking out clothes, shoes, sheets and towels ever since.

Everyone is quite right to talk about energy prices actually; to make the payments balance over the year, the direct debits now have to be hiked to cover the winter expenditure, unless you're fortunate enough to have massive quantities of cash ready for those big bills (or you're a lucky sod still on a "legacy" tariff with half decent rates).

We've seen our energy costs roughly double this summer compared to what they used to be; consumption though is actually down. Our actual monthly costs now (in the summer, no heating obviously) are actually higher than the year-average cost this time last year. This winter will hurt. Plus, even with no usage, the standing charge has shot up so you're paying even if you keep the ball valve shut on the gas meter. We've had to increase our DD by around 150% to deal with the predicted winter costs and it's still going to be a close call.

We generally have our house at 17 or 18 degrees over the winter, letting it drop to 13 degrees or so as a minimum. We have had it a bit warmer the last two winters overnight with a young baby, but he's battle hardened from camping in 6 deg temperatures now so it's cooling this winter. 23 degrees . . . I'd collapse!

I know, I know, I'm a subtropical creature at heart.

When all this malarkey about increased energy bills first came out, I did a calculation and worked out it might actually be cheaper to fly home to NZ/Aus for a month or two over the winter - the air fare (even on Emirates) would have been cheaper than paying for the levels of electricity that were threatened. Shocked

Might still do that ... Thinking Laughing

There's a season? I thought it was just in the summer when you have the windows open they come in.

I had a huge one in my room the other night, size of my palm and I could hear it as it made a tapping noise when it walked (on my wooden floors) Pale

Luckily I caught it and it went out the window... not sure if they survive the fall but whatever gravity is guilty Smile

I can believe it. At 28p per kWh, a 2kW heater on for 4 hours a day is going to cost nearly £70 a month alone, a 2kW heater isn't going to heat much at all!

Last month I spent £37.02 on electric and £3.34 on gas with standing charges being £13.59 and £7.78, I pay direct debit of £138.00 monthly, I have credit fro two months and have had a rebate of £400 this year. I use what I want when I want, fans, lights, etc without any real thought. The supplier I'm with has suggested I reduce my direct debit, but I will keep it as it is just in case. I can get a refund at any time with the money being in my bank within 3 days.
