Yet more unhinged aggression from car/van drivers. On my bicycle filtering down the outside of a long line of standing traffic (no cycle lane or bus lane). No oncoming traffic and when it comes, I just tuck in and wait, just like you would on a motorbike. Doesn't impinge on anyone nor put anyone at risk. Yet got called "pr*ck" etc.. as I was filtering past, presumably because some disgruntled driver wasn't happy that I was able to make progress when he couldn't. I guess you could claim it's gear oiling, but I'm getting sick of the abuse I've been getting recently. I've commuted tens of thousands of miles by bicycle on these same roads and never known anything like it; the last few months it's like everyone has been injected with an "aggression drug". ____________________ TG. |

1) Cyclists don't pay road or fuel tax therefore... "c**ts!"
2) Motorcyclists get exactly the same abuse for filtering but you can't hear it over the music of the engine ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

I think it's in reaction to the obsessive victim promotion of cyclists in recent years. Im presuming given your a biker you ride your bicycle in a sensible competent fashion where you take some responsibility for your safety but how many other cyclists do? Aren't we all sick of the entitled idiocy of the majority of cyclists? I particularly dislike it when im on my motorcycle and as such another vulnerable road user, more so in that having 180 kilos of motorcycle landing on me in the event of being run into is substantially worse than a cyclist faces with 15 kilos of bicycle. As soon as a cyclist hoves into view im immediately expected to set aside being vigilant for my own safety and prioritise them no matter how incompetent they operating their vehicle.
Im sorry you get abused, thats s#it but the cycling community really needs to get over itself.
Are you on any cycling forums? I wonder what the view is on those. |
Quite possibly a reaction; I do get the impression tensions are increased lately, although reading the news it seems this might be spilling over into other things too - maybe a general foul mood because of cost of living, govt f*ck ups etc..?
Like any road user, we tend to remember the ones who annoy us and they tend to be the ones doing some wrong (or perceived as wrong). Perhaps that's why this guy was getting louty - didn't approve of filtering on a bicycle? That said, plenty of folk seem to take issue with motorcycles filtering too so maybe the guy would have given me grief if I was on my VFR (but as Easy-X says, I'd definitely not hear him over the exhaust! ).
Ironically (or not?) the road users who annoy me the most are other cyclists, and that's particularly when I'm cycling. Red light jumpers, pavement riders, no lights, no helmet, erratic movements, no obs etc. etc.
No idea what the cycling community say about such things; I may have been on a forum many moons ago but not for years - my cycling is pretty much just commuting and occasional touring so I don't "enthuse" about it like the MAMILS do. No doubt if asked, they'd say "oh yeah, happens all the time mate, get a GoPro" or some other equally unhelpful remark (really don't see the point in filming these things, let alone trying to pedal it on YouTube etc.. in an effort to get views/subscribers etc.. but probably have the net effect of just fuelling the problem).
While not recently, but whenever I've cycled elsewhere in Europe I've never had any problems at all - OK, so I've only cycled maybe a few thousand miles in Europe but that's across cities, towns, villages and rural areas including busy mountain passes - everything seems to operate in a much higher state of harmony than here in the UK. Probably harks back to the UK's car obsession - we do, as a nation, seem very reluctant to entertain, or respect, other modes of transport (motorbikes included). ____________________ TG. |

I've never worn a helmet when cycling - they just never gelled with me when they became a thing. Red light jumping and pavement riding are just the perks of riding a pushbike though, aren't they? I suppose it depends on being able to pick your moments. I agree with you about the problems of the "us and them" attitude of cyclists, though. It's a circular, self-reinforcing tribalism that promotes antagonism between drivers and cyclists. The main difference from motorcycling being that there's a uniform, and the tendency to accessorise feeds into a kind of elitism. If anything, whether it's motorcycling or cycling, is taken too seriously, it's formalised and stops being fun. Cycling shouldn't be an act of courage, or a political statement, or a triumph of the will in a competition for space with cars, or an expression of religious allegiance. More and better cycle routes and paths would be a good solution. |

presumably you're joking. Like TG I probably spend more time on a pushdy than a motorbike, easier commute, gives me some exercise etc..
I don't get that much abuse but I try and keep to the rules and not act like the e-scooter tossers who ride on pavements, jump lights etc..,
however there are plenty who do rides like tossers and then you can add in entitled MAMILs to the mix . I guess it's these groups that give cyclist the poor rep.
We all know of course there's good and bad in everyone (Paul and Stevie said so.) no matter what form of road user you are. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750, SL1000

There onest was a th ink called a Cycling Proficiency Test where children were trained on how to ride a bike safely on the road.
Following the guidance of the highway code.
I don't know if that is still a thing.
Anyone balls enough to use any vehicle on public roads without proper training is a kunt.
But.... very difficult to police pedal power or foot-punted vehicles.
Cyclists still have a lot of rules to follow but prosecution is not a high priority.
It's a pity the wronguns can't be just culled by larger vehicles. ____________________ Disclaimer: The comments above may be predicted text and not necessarily the opinion of MCN. |

I still have my certificate (or do I?).. the local bobby ran it and used old fire hoses to layout the roads on teh school playground You weren't allowed to ride to school without it.. there is still something but it costs ££s and is run at inconvenient times. I looked into it for my kids. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750, SL1000

If you enjoy the sensation of riding motorcycles, and you don't ride a bicycle, you're missing out on a lot. It's still fun. In fact, I don't get it if you ride trails on an enduro and don't also ride mountain bike.
Around my way, I have offroad dirt tracks, forests, gravel paths, farmland and fields with footpaths along them, etc. Miles and miles. You bend a few rules but use your head and common sense, and everything's fine. I ride a semi-high end 1990s mountain bike (which is about as modern as I like to go on anything) and it's the absolute dog's bollocks. I mean, it eats everything. Uphill is a breeze thanks to the gearing, and it will go down any kind of slope - you just balance your weight forward or backward as if it was an enduro bike. Just mentioning this in case anyone thinks it's a case of the road tossers representing all "cyclists" - it isn't. Give it a go. |

Quite - frequently not the case unfortunately though due to the muppets local authorities employ to design these things. Some of the examples around Manchester are laughable, sending you directly into oncoming traffic, into lamp posts, off kerbs etc you name it - few are actually designed with cyclists in mind (or actually one would argue designed at all, more like “who can draw the most ridiculous diagram” while in a pub). |
"shared" cycle lanes are one of the the stupidest inventions. In what circumstances would it be appropriate for someone to be doing 20mph on a footway?
Actually, the only time I've had someone get humpty with me when I've been cycling was because they thought I should be riding on a shared cycleway running along a busy seafront, not the road.
Cycleways need to be seperate but part of the road, not part of the footway. This is especially pertinant because if they're part of the footway, they create a traffic conflict point where the cyclist has to cross at every junction. If they are part of the road, joining traffic has to give-way.
There are a few totally fuckwitted ones in York. Like this "shared" cycleway which takes you round the corner then across a double toucan crossing with a staggered chicaine of barriers in the middle, then back round the corner again... Or you could just ride along the road.

And there's this.

Another example of lack of understanding; cycle lanes are not mandatory, despite what a lot of car drivers claim. Indeed, as you suggest, cycle lanes are actually quite often LESS safe than being on the road.
Here are a few gems around here;
The aforementioned cycle lane feeding you into the oncoming cycle lane (it gets worse ahead too, the cyclelane kinks left then right, there's no radius, it's just a sharp turn, but the right turn has a signpost right in the middle of it). The lunacy is this area has just been resurfaced and they've put all the markings back again the same way.
https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/idiocy_1.png
Then we've got the Oxford Road corridor; I actually actively avoid this because while in theory it's the main cycle route heading south out of Manchester, it's absolutely horrendous. They've literally splashed out with green road surfacing everywhere (at a significant cost no doubt) but the designs are very questionable, essentially revolving around the idea of keeping cyclist segregated from the road. Nice in theory, but in reality:
Traffic heading south and wanting to turn left into Dagenham Street don't see cyclists because they're hidden behind the cars inevitably parked in the bays, they then are fed into the junction at the last minute.
https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/idiocy_2.jpg.png
Other issues with the same design; cycle lanes run directly behind bus stops, so people get off the bus (usually glued to their 'phones) and walk straight into the cycle lane (and cyclists). This is a busy area, so we're not talking one or two, quite often a dozen will alight at once. Although I've not witnessed this second potential issue (as I don't go down there in the morning), I imagine similar issues exist with loading/unloading of goods.
