Its that time again, I'm looking to change bikes from my Comet 125 to something with a bit more poke.
Ok so heres the conditions, I'm looking to get about £1500 for the Comet and might add about bit more to that amount. So what can I get thats going to be good?
I'm looking to do my test or DNS soon, suggestions as to which to do would also be greatly appreciated.
I've done the whole naked bike thing now and have been thinking of changing to a faired bike. One last thing I'd like to keep the insurance to under £500 tpft.
Yeah I know Demanding aren't I
and if anyone has the moon on a stick I'd like that too ____________________ <-- I'm taller than Charley Boorman look |

GPZ500s. Not necessarily one of mine , they are good bikes and you should get a decent one for that sort of money, maybe a bit more on the insurance though. I got a good runner for 850 quid recently (which my mate then crashed).
Unfaired, you could do worse than a Jap. home market CB400 super4. Good build quality and more than enough poke to be going on with. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Bandit 600 faired mate. Reliable, decent bhp, parts are everywhere and not as expensive or hard to obatin as its smaller cc cousins (bandit 250,400) £120 if you want the extra lower fairings.
Plenty of restriction kits kicking about too, and its NU group 8, I THINK! 8 or 9 anyway. You should get a good quote with that easily.
Ach, I may as well post the one I've been drooling over for a while.

You can actually get official Suzuki Bandit S fairing as well! £271 for a set though.
https://www.suzuki-gb.co.uk/partdetail.asp?id=353&m=32 Yes I know it's black, but you can get em in Blue. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Bandit =
They may just be in your price range for a decent older one, but then you have to buy the fairing to go on top of that. Cant see insurance being more than the budget you put.
Then again, I have to agree with StinkWheel. A GPZ500 will be a great bike. Very cheap to buy, run and maintain, yet reliable and have plenty of poke for good fun. Also, they sound gorgeous with a full predator exhaust system. ____________________ Aprilia RSV Mille R Edwards Replica - Aprilia RS250 - Suzuki GSXR600 Supersport Race Bike |

What do you people think of Honda CBR400's, and VFR400's.
I just saw a review which said they were insurance group 12 is that right? ____________________ <-- I'm taller than Charley Boorman look |

I suppose the question should be what will you be using it for?
If you just want to go out at weekends and zoom about, go for a race-rep type 400. If you want a reliable commuter bike or to do distance, maybe a bit of touring, a 500 twin makes more sense as a cheaper alternative to a 600.
Don't think that just because they are a bit heavier, the twins are slow. My GPZ500s was good for 125mph and ridden hard was able to keep up with an FZR750 on twisty Scottish A roads on a run I did last summer. Admittedly he pulled away on long straights but the 2-stroke like powerband on the GPZ meant you could really keep it on the boil through the corners (with throwovers and tent fitted on comfortably). ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. I can vouch for the GPZ. They pack a lot of punch when you hit the powerband at 7000rpm. Easily the most powerful of the 500's and leagues ahead of the honda CB500
(Ok. i admit James + Honda = sour grapes but why all the bike mags etc keep on ranting about the CB I will never know... the GPZ kicks out almost 10Hp more, Is very smooth, has an effective fairing and sticks to the road like glue. The honda rots away, the paint soon flakes off the engine and it struggles to reach 105mph let alone the GPZ's 125mph. Finally the GPZ has a 2-2 exhaust system and sounds great at idle and howls at speed - and thats just the plain baffled cans! Fit a quality stainless system like the predator set-up [NOT the naff looking 2-1 nexus cr*p] and it will sound brutal and add a few extra bhp ) |
