Needs change. Touring specifically I no longer need to do so I'm weighing up the totally gai Kawasaki Vulcan vs. swapping the XSR for the old fella's* Triumph Bonneville America What can I say? There's something about arse-less chaps that are irresistible
tl;dr metric vs. imperial cruisers, EFI Jap vs US/UK carbs.

Cruising? 0ddly enough the Vulcan S has caught my eye recently. the low seat height is the main attraction, but i like the look of it too
the Moto Guzzi V7 is another thats popped up on the radar. ____________________ current bike Yamaha Thunderace.

Yeah, definitely the former. IIRC the old fella bought the very newest Triumph that wasn't EFI. I said in passing one day, as a joke, that I'd swap my XSR for it and he seemed dead serious with the affirmative. This is the same bike I managed to ride down to Box Hill with the front tyre at 10 psi
There's something about foot plates (or at least foot forward pegs) I like. I think Freud would have a comment if he were still alive And it's a strange combination hooning about on a cruiser that is neither a metric cruiser nor a tacky Harley ____________________ Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

One was being MOT'd last time I was round one of the local garages. A V-Four with four proper rorty exhausts. Genuinely really sounded good, and it was still on factory exhausts I think, definitely not a modern anodyne Honda noise at all. Was a later 90's one though, like this.

On the Vulcan though, modern emissions regulations have been the cause of many a motorcycle design crime, mainly in the area of exhausts. But even in a field with so many potential competitors, the standard exhaust on the Vulcan 650 stands out as spectacularly awful.

But the whole bike just doesn't gel in terms of looks really. The overall design is all swoopy, and then the cylinder head looks like Darth Vader's codpiece. But they clearly couldn't be arsed to change it, so they split the difference on the radiator shrouds and swingarm plates. And then you've got the exhaust hanging off like a chargrilled chicken drumstick. No idea what it's like to ride, but it's not a looker. ____________________ Current - '94 VFR750FR, '00 VFR800FI Previous - '10 Street Triple R, '92 MZ ETZ301, '05 TTR250, NSR125R, KMX125, "Honda" Win (chinese copy of an old Honda design with a C90 engine)

The problem I have with Hondas (and why I wouldn't go back to the Rebel) is the mid position foot pegs. I much prefer foot forward plates/pegs on a cruiser.
For modern bikes (Euro 3 or newer) there's only the Rebel and Vulcan available in any quantity under 650cc. Priority 1 is weaving about city traffic and even the Vulcan might be a bit lardy for that. Certainly a Speedmaster or Yamaha Bolt is too much - TBF I'm asking for stupid with "small engined cruiser" - but fuck it, I begrudge paying the higher road tax band for a bigger engine
Not relevant for classic bikes with no road tax ofc. I'd probably go full tart-mode and get a Virago but it'd have to be a late '80s one* so not worth worrying about till I hear some noises about how the ULEZ is going to treat Euro 3 and vintage bikes.
