Lexmoto low power headlights

I have been having trouble getting my headlights to work
- Testing the headlight plug I only get 8v/9v
- Testing the stator plug disconnected I get 15v-25v
- Testing the stator plug connected I get 8v/9v

I have just replaced the regulator/rectifier - the old one burnt out on the red wire.

What could cause the output to be 8v?

Anything below 12.5v is pretty useless
sounds like a knackered stator
but
it may not be a single issue but a result of 'owner improvements'

Stator disconnected
Yellow wire (lights) is reading around 20v idle
White wire (charging) is reading around the same - both voltages jump up when I rev the engine.

Stator connected
Yellow wire is reading 8v
White wire is reading 12v - both stay the same if i rev the engine.

Would the low voltage mean the regulator is faulty? maybe bad earth? or there is a drain somewhere?

I think the stator is working correctly?

Can you regulator be faulty? Limiting the voltage to 8v.

When the yellow wire from the stator is disconnected it reads around 20v when idle - 60+v when revving.

When the yellow is connected into the loom the voltage drops to 8v.

Looking at the wiring diagram it connects to the regulator, auto choke & up by the handlebars, when testing these wires they show 8v.

What would cause the voltage to drop to 8v when connected.

Hi There,

I have replaced the Stator and the Regulator but I am still only getting 8v to the headlights.

I have checked all the wires and connectors - they look clean and I have tested for continuity.

I am stuck to what could be the problem. The bike starts and runs fine but my son needs mot on it to get his CBT sorted.

So any help would be great.

Do the headlights run off the battery or on direct lighting where they are run directly from the stator and only work with the engine running?

If it's the latter, it may be they are running on a form of AC, either half-wave or full-wave and you'd need to use the meter on the AC setting to get a correct idea of the actual voltage.

It's always worth checking a previous owner hasn't tried to "upgrade" the bulbs by fitting higher wattage ones, this doesn't work with direct lighting systems, often just makes things worse. I've has success using LED bulbs on my wifes scooter BUT it has a properly functioning charging system AND I know it's halfwave rectified because LEDs wouldn't work on fullwave.
