Guys my daughter has just bought herself a 2011 Yamaha jog 50 as a project to work on together until she’s 16.
So the jog appears to have a good few issues. The bike hasn’t been used for approximately 3-4 years and has done approx 4500 miles.
Now I’ve never own owned a ped so still trying to my way around it. I’ve only ever had big bikes which is what’s got her interested. So I know I need to ditch the fuel that’s in there and replace the 2 stroke oil as a must as it’s probably gone off and will replace the battery. How ever these are the current problems

Bike doesn’t start on the electric ignition, the relay clicks but nothing else. The bike does start from the kick start. It can run idle for about 5 minutes and then suddenly cut out. If you rev the bike it revs but in my eyes is slow the respond to the throttle movement and sounds a little bogged down.there’s no smoke from the exhaust. If on the stand and you twist the throttle the bike doesn’t try to move ( is there a switch or something that whilst stand is down it prevents the bike moving if the throttle is twisted). If I tip the bike to one side on the stand on the rear wheel is off the floor and twist the throttle the rear wheel spins. If I sit on it and take of the stand that twist the throttle it revs not a lot else happens until the throttle is opened fully and there is a small creep forwards but barely anything at all.
I removed the carb last night, all seemed ok and no blockages.
Removed the spark plug, a little sooty so gave it a quick clean until I get another one. Was a little oil around the spark end of the thread ( looked like oil anyway)

Can anyone shed any light? I’m hoping just fresh fuel may sort it

Dead battery wont be helping. I'd see what it's like with the new battery and plug and your fresh fuel.

There are a whole heap of potential issues, including whatever lead to it being put away and not used for 4 years. I'd be asking myself if someone just stopped using it or did they have a problem they couldn't be bothered to fix and threw it in a corner?

It's 12 years old now and has been sat unused for a good bit so one potential issue is crank seals. Hopefully not though, the fact it starts easily tends to suggest that aspect is ok.

In my experience, a small 2t that hasn't been run for a while can be very slow and boggy for a while until it's got up to temperature, then they seem to clear their throats and run properly. It might just need a good run as long as you're happy it's getting 2t oil so either blue smoke from the exhaust or ideally check the pump is putting oil out by disconnecting the hose end briefly with it idling and checking to see there's a drip.

I'm surprised the carb is clean after sitting for 4 years.

Petrol separates after a while. Especially if its been allowed to evaporate.
The residue is not easily dissolved again just by adding fresh petrol.
A dose of a fuel system cleaner can help as first line of attack.
STP etc. Halfords sell that and other similar products probably probably from £7 - £10>
They are aimed at cars so you need to consider dosage.
For a car you ad the bottle to the tank. Avg. Car 50lt. Ped 5lt.
I couldn't say if over disingenuous is harmful, probably just create a lot of smoke.
These products help dissolve petrol additives and gum.

Also check the choke is working.
Could be a cable stuck.
Engine stall on warm up is usually over rich fuel.
The purpose of choke is to provide excess fuel to allow for the fuel that condenses on cold engine surface at startup.
When the engine eventually warms up that extra fuel prevents proper combustion.

Haynes manuals can help with the theory. Engage the daughter in the theory not just swinging the spanners. Cool

I’m going to completely flush the fuel system and I have fresh fuel to go in.
Re the choke I could be wrong but there’s only wires going to the choke no cables

When I bought my 2014 speed triple last year it had only done 990 miles. Two handfuls of gone off fuel had to be scooped out once I started putting super unleaded in

I'd also have the side cover off and check the variator/rollers/belt etc
things may have got sticky during the lay up.

I don't know the jog50 but generally when a bike/scoot has been dormant (or new to you) it best to go over it as thoroughly as you can
checking, testing, cleaning as you go.
You learn a lot when you do this and any future problems will be easier to deal with.

Take and share good pics or even vids if you want the best online advice too

So new battery fitted and now the indicators don’t work lol.
Emptied the fuel tank gave everything a flush through and put fresh fuel in and nothing, not even on kick start.
Waiting for the service kit to arrive but pulled the spark plug again. Having never had a two stroke before should the plug oily looking.
Pulled the belt cover off. What sort of tension should be on the belt as I could squeeze it together in the birdie with ease

Also as the electric ignition hadn’t been work I unplugged the starter and wired it straight to the battery and nothing so I’m guessing the starter is what is at fault here. So far unless I’m being blind I have only found one fuse on the whole bike

Middle sorry fat fingers.

Looking through a few YouTube vids the tension on the belt might actually be ok.
So pulled the clutch off and looks like I have oil leaking from the gasket for the gear box.

I don’t have photo bucket anymore to upload pics
