Unfortunately I had a series of poor biology teachers at school so this is definitely a topic I should research (with a nice cup of teat in hand!)

They probably didn't know about it. They didn't know about it when I went to college, they knew what was happening but they didn't know how it was happening.

Look up animations for ATP synthase and prepare to have your mind blown.

Erm it most certainly would not. The Earth Moon system would continue to orbit around its barycentre but would be free to drift off wherever local gravitational effects took it. I suspect that Jupiter would have a pretty large influence overall.

So the moon would still control the tide? I know the lack of solar heat would mean the water wouldquickly become ice but even the ice would move under tidal action.

Interestingly, solar energy is kinetic at the atomic and molecular level. Photon impacts on atoms cause electrons to increase the level of their orbit by a set quantum raising the energy level of the atom and in some cases to escape entirely causing current flow.

It turns out that life would be dependent on cracks in the rocky core and hot minerals (like black smokers) enriching the local environment. The gravitational effects of Jupiter probably wouldn't be enough to cause this and that would reduce the probability of life existing - although it's not a certainty that it doesn't. The same applies to Enceladus and Saturn.

Sea creatures use ocean currents similarly.

I know it's not quite the angle you were looking for, but without these things whole ecosystems would cease to exist, so the energy is definitely being exploited in a way.
