Written off after vandalism

The BMW F650GS I've had for 6 months was vandalised - someone broke the steering lock, bending the handlebars, drilled out the ignition, and then gave up - because it has a f***ing immobiliser.

Insurers have declared it 'beyond economical repair'.

I'm wondering what to do when they kick me in the balls with a low offer...

Should I take the money or ask nicely for more (threaten them with court)?

Also thinking I could buy the bike back and repair myself (doubt I will have the time, so could end up paying a mechanic to do it) or sell on to someone else to repair for themselves.

And the silver lining, what to buy next? I have a Divi 600 - love it, except the lack of ABS. The BMW was more comfy though. A Tracer 700 might be somewhere in between. Time to get out on a test ride

Reject the first offer. Find evidence on ebay or autotrader of the prices the same bike is going for, and send it to them.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Insurers have suprisingly offered only £100 less than I paid for it. Less excesses...

The retention cost to keep the bike is £1400..
Damage includes:
Tank cover snapped
Fairing snapped
Ignition surround gone
Ignition barrel and below drilled out
Steering lock snapped
Bars bent

Sounds like it's not worth the hassle..

Regardless of whether or not the offer is good, check your policy for a total loss clause. I had this once with MCE, where they paid out following a theft, but then cancelled the policy with no refund. So I was out £500 for the cost of the policy.

I think I might have avoided that if I had another bike bought to transfer the policy to, or to add to the policy. As it stood I had no bike while I waited for the insurance money, so nothing to insure.

They were an awful company to deal with.

They finally agreed to £3700.

They're keeping the salvage.. no budge on price there.
