Brake Pads Issue

I've just changed the rear pads in the Bandit, a job I've done loads of times.

I could only get hold of EBC pads (not my fave) but the job went well – everything came apart easily, the piston retracted with just finger pressure and reassembly was straightforward.

But... Initially, the rear brake barely worked (and yes I did remember to pump the piston back out!). And now I've just done a 100 mile ride and the brake is working okay but the rear wheel is literally covered in brake dust (and it was spotless before I went out).

I've not had either issue before, I can't see anything obviously wrong and on the centre stand the rear wheel rotates easily and stops sharply when the brake pedal is pressed.

Is this just the pads bedding in or is there something I've missed?

I think the brake pad dust on the rear wheel is the result of the pad bedding in. If the brake is working satisfactorily, I would clean it up and watch the rate of brake dust buildup over time. Maybe take it out for another 100 mile ride. The rear wheel should be noticeably cleaner the second time around. Organic brake pads will shed more than semi-metallic or ceramic compounds, so keep that in mind as well.

If you wore the old pads down to the metal and scored the disc it might be machining the pads away.

Presumably you bought HH pads not race ones?

There are lots of possibilities. The only thing I can say with any certainty is that I've never had it happen.

Clean it up and see if it happens again. If it does, keep a close eye on pad wear - the dust comes from the pads wearing.

It could be:
- A worn and grooved disc that generates more dust as the pad beds in, because of the high and low points on the disc. Should behave once it's bedded in.
- A particularly rough disc that is just shredding the pads.
- Shit or wrong pads that will wear too fast.
- Fake pads that will wear out in 500 miles.

As other have said, there are lots of fakes out there. There are also genuine parts with shit quality control, but that tends to be a problem for a good fit, not a fundamental problem with materials. It's worth buying from a company you trust. If you want to buy from ebay, plenty of trustworthy companies have a shop there.

Is the disc far below its service limit ?

Well I checked the brake and it's working fine, so I cleaned up the wheel and the dust hasn't returned.

I can only think that the new pads were maybe a slightly different shape and touching the unworn edge of the disk and now the excess pad material has worn off.

The disk itself is in pretty good shape.

Sounds like the problem fixed itself. Keep half an eye on pad wear, but if the dust has gone then it's probably fine.
